FITE:

I am seeking information about my mother's maternal grandmother's family. Her name was Sarah Jane Fite. Sarah Fite's sister was Zua Ella Fite Stecker.

The obit for Zua's daughter Indiana Ruth Twiss states:

"Indiana Ruth Twiss was born at Seymour, Iowa on Nov. 27, 1895 to John and Zua Ellen Fite Stecker. She was one of a familly of 6 children: Clarence, Cora , Melvin, Bertha, and Henry.....

The family left Iowa and moved to White Lake, S.D. where Inda began her education. Her father came to Colorado looking for a home site and the family was moved to a homestead near Holyooke in an immigrant car...." I think this would place Zua Fite Stecker in White Lake somewhere between 1900 and 1910. I noticed that there are Fites located in the White Lake area in the history index. I'm wondering if there is any chance that these Fites could be the parents or family of Zua and Sarah Jane Fite.

Is there any information available on the Fites of Aurora County?

WEBSTER SCHOOL PALATINE TWP:

Olin B. Camp b.12,Sept 1857 was my grandfather and lived in Aurora Co.and owned property there (Sec 15, Palatine twsp) All of his six children, including my mother Carrie Ellen Camp b.23 Aug 1891, were born in Aurora Co. I have recently been in touch with a decendant of Olin's brother from Ohio and she sent me a copy of a picture of Webster School students. She said on the back it said that the school year was 1898-1899 and that Olin B. Camp was the school clerk and five of the children were his children, George, Bert, Lester, Edna, and Carrie Camp. Apparently, the picture had been sent to relatives of the Camps in Ohio.

My question: is there any record of Webster School, and is there anyone who can help me identify the students and perhaps the teacher. My mother would have been 7 years old and perhaps in the second grade. I do know that her first grade teacher was Jessie Haynes, (I'm not sure about the spelling of her last name)as my oldest sister Jessie was named after our mother's 1st grade teacher. I don't know if she taught at Webster School for more than one year, but my mother never forgot her.

Question #2: my mother taught school herself, for one year, some place near Plankinton around 1911-1912, are there any county records of other schools with the names of the teachers, in or around Plankinton?

The picture I have of Webster School isn't too good, but I will gladly share a copy of it to anyone interested.

Thanks much for your help. Phoebe (Brown) O'Dell

SCHWEBACH

I am researching the surname Schwebach in Aurora Co., for the town of White Lake specifically. Eugene and Anna (Burg) Schwebach and Valentine and Susan (Bouquet) Schwebach moved to White Lake ~1885. We have talked to the secretary at St. Peter Cath. Church and both couples had several children baptized there. However, we have found little else to prove they were there. The biggest mystery is for Valentine, when we started digging for research we found several pieces of information that led us to believe he died in White Lake after April of 1890. His wife, Susan, was pregnant and delivered her last son in December of that year. It's been passed down in records that he suffered from Bright's Disease (kidneys), and we know that the 2 brothers were supposedly working for the railroad at the time. Through Eugene's descendants we know that he and wife, Anna, ran a general store in White Lake for a few years. We know that Susan and children moved to, Granville, Iowa, but we're not sure if Val was alive and traveled with her, or if she left after he died. I have visited every cemetery in Aurora Co. to no avail, and the secretary at St. Peter has no record of Val's death. I'm mainly just wondering if there is ever any bit of history from White Lake where the Schwebach name is even mentioned. They were a deeply Catholic family, their older brother, James, was the Bishop in LaCrosse, WI. We would love to know where Val is buried, as we have confirmation of all his other 9 brother/sisters. He is originally from Caledonia, MN, where his parents, several siblings, and wife/children are buried. He also had brothers in Granville, IA; we've checked all the cemeteries and there is no Valentine there either. A long shot, I know, but we've gotten responses back from people whom I thought wouldn't know anything; only to have them give me some great info.

Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Vicki Hillmer

Ida Jane Wallace

I am searching for any information on my ancestress, Ida Jane Wallace, born about1874-80 in PA. The family later moved to Washington Co., MD. She went to SD from MD about 1900 and supposedly taught in SD. Our family has a copy of a letter she sent back home in which she talks about "teaching again in a few weeks". The letter was mailed from White Lake to her "brother" Daniel Alfred Wallace in MD on September 1, 1912. I have never been able to locate her in the Aurora County records, but she did appear in the 1880 Chambersburg, Franklin Co., PA census. She was listed as a daughter of Hiram Charles Wallace and Barbara Ellen [Trittle] Wallace. If she married, I may not have been able to locate her as I am searching under the name "Wallace".

Steinfeldt:

Seeking info re: Gustav and Mary (Prueter) Steinfeldt. Mary was my Gr. Aunt. She was born in Wisconsin about 1858. Married Gustav and moved to Plankinton, SD where I find the name listed among the on-line Early Homesteaders in Aurora County. From that listing it appears Gustav's brother, Adolph, also homesteaded on adjoining property in Aurora County. See that Gustav is also listed in the on-line 1909 Business Directory as Real Estate and Abstracts. Children that I know of were Henry, August, Frances and Agnes.

August farmed in the Stickney area and later moved into the village. Spent his final years in Mitchell. On-line info tells me he was born 1895. Would appreciate any other info as to dates of birth, death, arrival in SD. Also any information as to where they are buried or church(s) they would have attended. SIMMONS family:

I am searching for ANY information on the Simmons family. On census records of her daughter's family, Jennie it is always listed as born in Canada. Her maiden name was SIMMONS, she married Grover L. Brown. She had (at least, but all that I know of) one daughter, Mary Lillian (nickname Molly) Brown in 1856 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Then they moved to Havana, Mason Co, Illinois.

My grandfather's letters always said that Jennie SIMMONS was from White Lake, Aurora Co, SD and that the family owned property there. In the early 1900s he remembers traveling to that area as his mother Mary (who married Alphonso ISBELL) needed to "claim" (and perhaps sell?) land that was left to her. Does anyone know anything at all about any Simmons families in this area? Jennie was probably born around 1830s i'm guessing. I haven't been able to find her or husband Grover Brown in ANY census records. Is there a record of some sort in that area that might show land that was inherited and/or sold in the early 1900s? Thank you for your help! I'd be happy to share anything I have on Jennie's descendants! I do have a picture of Jennie also.

Diane Rasmussen Fri Feb 5 22:22:33 1999

I am looking for relatives and any information on my Great grandfather Charles Miller. We know that Charles and his wife Willamina (Wehr) Miller came to SD in the late 1800s and settled in the White Lake area of Dakota Territory. They had 4 children, Arthur b1873, Clara, George b1882 (my grandfather) and Anna. Willamina died shortly after giving birth to Anna. Charles sent the children to live with other families. George went to live with and was later adopted by the Mott family from ND (We have a picture of him with the Motts standing in front of a covered wagon, taken in Madison, SD. He looks to be about 3 years of age), Arthur, Clara and Anna went to Wisconsin to Wehr relatives. We do not know what became of Charles Miller. It is said that he had two brothers also living in the White Lake area during this time and possibly other family members. We believe Willamina is buried in the White Lake cemetary. We think there are still Miller relatives in the area. Any information would be wonderful as this has been a puzzle for the family for many many years.

Norm Steffen Fri Nov 13 10:31:46 1998

My name is Norm Steffen currently living Maryland. From what I can tell my GG Grandfather's (Herman Carl Frederick Steffen) family lived in White Lake & Belford Dakota/South Dakota approx. 1880-1889. After his 11th child was born his wife died in 1887 . About 1889 he moved the family to Yakima Washington.

I have heard rumors of his brothers being in the area and I am trying to track them down. Upon several occasions I have seen what might be references to his brother Friedrich Carl in several publications including; "1882-1982...100 Years of Progress, Still Growing Through Time, White Lake, SD, July 2-3-4, 1982"and"Aurora County History", (1983) Published by the Aurora County Historical Society. I would appreciate any more information that anyone may have.
