Grant County, South Dakota was created in 1873 from Codington and Deuel Counties.  It was named for American Civil War general and U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant.
For the first few years, no elections were held, and the county almost disolved by default.  However, a new petition was presented in 1878, and a county seat was located at Inkpa City.  Later the county seat was moved to the town of Milbank, the current county seat.
The county is divided into seventeen townships: 
Adams Township,Alban, Big Stone, Blooming Valley, Farmington, Georgia, Grant Center, Kilborn, Lura, Madison, Mazeppa, Melrose, Osceola, Stockholm, Troy, Twin Brooks, Vernon.
