Birth/Death/Marriage Records

For Birth Records which are 100 Years and Older, please search the State of South Dakota Birth Record Search Page.

The Brown County Courthouse has Birth and Death records dating back to 1905, and marriage records dating back to 1885. Birth Records are available from any Register of Deeds in the state, provided the birth was in South Dakota. Death Record searches submitted to the Brown County Register of Deeds will be first undertaken in the county, if not found, they will be forwarded along to the South Dakota State Dept of Health for a more extensive search.


Land Records

Land Records dating back to the 1880s are available from the Brown County Register of Deeds. There is no charge for searching real estate records, but you must provide a legal description of the property that you want searched (ie, Township, Section).

   

Searches for liens or mortgages are not provided by the Registrar of Deeds. You may contact one of the following local businesses to perform such searches.

Estate Records

Records regarding the settling of a deceased person's estate are particularly valuable research documents. The Brown County Register of Deeds has extensive records regarding the settlment of estates. More information regarding availabilty will be added in the future.

Naturalization and Immigration Records

Brown County Naturalization Records have all been transferred to the South Dakota State Archives in Pierre. Information for years 1881-1954 is available.

Cost:   Search requests require a prepaid search fee of $10.60 for each name searched.
