BRULE COUNTY TOWNSHIPS and why they were named. AMERICA Township: All nationalities were included with the "America" Township name. CHAMBERLAIN Township: was so named for the largest populated town in the township. CLEVELAND Township: Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Cleveland were early settlers in Cleveland Township. EAGLE Township: Large eagles populated the Eagle Township area, thus the name. GRANDVIEW Township: The view from the township was grand, so we have Grandview Township. KIMBALL Township: Named for the town in the township. HIGHLAND Township: Was geographically higher than border townships. OLA Township: Named because of numerous Scandinavian settlers. LYON Township: Named after the Lyon brothers, early settlers. PLEASANT GROVE Township: Named for Pleasant Grove, Iowa. PLUMMER Township: Named for homesteader Plummer. PLAINFIELD Township: Very flat land. PUKWANA Township: Meaning Peace Pipe or Smoke of the Peace Pipe was named for the town of Pukwana in the township. RICHLAND Township: Describes the thoughts of the pioneer as he farmed this fertile Richland Township soil. RED LAKE Township: Named for the lake, which is a feeding ground for wildlife. SMITH Township: Named for the first settler in the township. TOREY Township: Named for the first settler in the township. WALDRO Township: Civil War Veterans were predominant settlers in Waldro Township. WEST POINT Township: Named for location in the northwest corner of the county. UNION Township: Early homesteaders chose Union as the name for the township they occupied. Union Township had the first flowing artesian well drilled in the county. WILBUR Township: Organized in 1883. WILLOW Lake Township: Joined other townships in the county in their quest to build schools and churches and make the community a better place for all who resided there.
