The 89th Div., which included many Lyman County men, has been honored by Commander-in-Chief, Gen. Pershing, who stated,  “Soldiers of all divisions under the First, Third and Fifth Corps of the 89th Div – you will all be long-remembered for your stubborn persistence, your storming of obstinately defending machine guns nests; your penetration, yard by yard, of woods and ravines and your heroic resistance in the face of counter attacks.”  More.   Apr. 17, 1919

The two little Armstrong children, living with their aunt, Mrs. Cora M. Miller, west of Iona, went to Oacoma by stage Monday where they were met by their father who took them to  to his home in Iowa.   Jan. 30, 1919

Mrs. Agnes E. Auld and Mrs. M.Q. Sharpe went to Plankinton Tuesday to attend the funeral of  Mr. O.P. Auld, brother of the late I.N. Auld.   May 8, 1919

Joe Authier of Vivian was thrown from his horse Saturday and dislocated his knee joint, but is able to be around with the aid of a crutch. Sept. 4, 1919

 A beautiful life flitted from our midst Tuesday, Aug. 12 when death claimed the life of Lucretia, wife of James P. Brewster of near Iona, She was born Lucretia Bacon at Ashtabula, Ohio June 24, 1845 and was married Nov. 28, 1869. In the eve of the sunset of her happy wedded life she was about to round out her Golden Jubilee of marriage when the angel of death sang her requiem. More.   Aug. 21, 1919

F.I. Sheffer has begun erecting a fine new home north of the Christian church in Oacoma. He has also purchased the John Bonson residence north of the railroad tracks thus showing his faith in Oacoma’s future. Mr. and Mrs.  Sheffer came to Oacoma more than 25 years ago and when they disposed of their farm a few weeks ago they could have gone whither they would, but chose to remain among their old friends and familiar surroundings.   Aug. 28, 1919

George Davis and family had a mighty funny experience Sunday while driving on the road south of Reliance to the White River. They encountered a mound of dirt created by a hillside falling off. George drove onto it and became high-centered. George used a fence post to move the rear end over the hump and in doing so, the car rolled freely and went over a 70-80 foot drop. Fortunately, his wife and children had gotten out of the car. More.  June 4, 1919

Mr. H. Doolittle died at the Presho home of her daughter, Mrs. C.H. West, Sunday. Her remains were taken to Storm Lake, Iowa for burial in the family plot.    Mar. 13, 1919

Arthur Floyd, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Cy Floyd of Kennebec, died from pneumonia. He was with the army of occupation in Germany at the time. He was a member of the first draft sent from Lyman County in September of 1917 and expected to return home soon.   Mar. 20, 1919

Mr. George Gammon and bride arrived in Dupree Monday. He was married at Oacoma the 23rd of last month having returned from France. Numerous friends tendered them a charivari last night by appearing at their home and disturbing the quietness of their home with melodious music from cow bells, tin pans, etc. Oct. 16, 1919

George Gramm of Chamberlain was recently discharged from the army at Camp Fremont, Calif. He was just two days out to sea from Camp Mills, NY when the armistice was signed.   Feb 13, 1919

Oacoma is to have a “movie.” A.L. Greene has purchased a new moving picture outfit and will put on a show two evenings a week.   May 1, 1919

Pvt. Tom Merritt, son of Mrs. William Grimshaw, was mustered out of the service from Camp Dodge. He was in the aviation service. He arrived last week from Brooks Field, Texas.   Feb. 6, 1919

Claude Grimshaw brought into town Saturday a Golden Eagle whose wing tips were six feet four inches from tip to tip. He caught it in a trap. Its plumage was very heavy and beautiful.   Feb 27, 1919

In the casualty list in this morning’s daily papers appears the name of Rudolph C. Groves of Kennebec, dying in France from some disease.  Mar. 20, 1919

Quite a surprise was sprung by friends on Mr. Carl Sheldon and Mrs. Marie when it was learned the young couple had been married Tuesday afternoon. She is the daughter of Eric Hade of Oacoma. Murdo Coyote  Sept. 18, 1919

Lieut. E.C. Hall was a passenger on the westbound train yesterday. He was returning to Vivian from the army service at Newport News, Va  Feb 13, 1919

Marie Cotton and Earl Halligan of Iona were married at Burke July 5 and will live on Mr. Halligan’s claim near White River.     July 17, 1919

John Richard Halligan was born at Peoria, Ill. Jan. 1, 1860 and died July 28, 1919. July 14, 1881, he married Miss Sarah McCrady at Kempton, Ill. They had 14 children. His wife and 9 children are left to mourn his loss.  Aug. 2, 1919

James Murray with two immigrant cars and Frank Hamseth with four, arrived in Presho Sunday  from Ossian, Iowa.  Mar. 13, 1919

D. A. Hancock of Valentine killed his brother, L. Hancock, in a dispute over property. He is now is Sioux Falls awaiting Federal court  Oct. 16, 1919

Mr. Roy Hanna and family of Presho are sorrowing over the loss of their little four year old girl who died Tuesday from complications following a cold.  Jan. 23, 1919

Albert Hilmoe, who was in the heavy field artillery in France, returned home to Presho Saturday night and will tell you all about the conditions over there, if asked. Mar. 13, 1919

John Hullinger of Vivian was recently mustered out of the service at Camp Dodge. He was stationed at Newport News, Va., awaiting transfer overseas when the armistice was signed. He accompanied a shipment of horses to France first where he remained for four days.  Feb 20, 1919

J.W. Jackson received a letter from his son, Harold, in the U.S. Navy, saying he had been transferred to the J. Fred Talbert, one of the new destroyers built recently by the government, and saying he will leave this week for a year’s absence. He will be on a cruise on which he expects to tour England, France and the Mediterranean seaports. His parents were expecting him to be discharged and return home.   July 17, 1919

A most tragic death occurred at Mr. and Mrs.  Felix Quilt’s home at Fort Hale when their little daughter, Lody, fell forward into a pan of hot water which had been hurriedly placed on the floor. She was taken immediately for medical treatment, but death ensued  within 24 hours.  July 24, 1919

Elizabeth Rencountre Quilt was born on Lyman Bottom near Fort Hale in 1848. She was saved from a massacre (by the Crow) of the Sioux when her oldest brother hid all of the children in a gulch. Their mother was scalped and left to die. She married Elija Quilt who died a few years ago. Elizabeth passed away peacefully Jan. 22, 1919, of pneumonia, at her home in Fort Hale Bottom. He has also purchased the John Bonson residence north of the railroad tracks thus showing his faith in Oacoma’s future. Mr. and Mrs.  Sheffer came to Oacoma more than 25 years ago and when they disposed of their farm a few weeks ago they could have gone whither they would, but chose to remain among their old friends and familiar surroundings.   Aug. 28, 1919

Stevens was away from his home last week to get lumber to build a new home to replace the one that burned down a few weeks ago, dogs entered his chicken coop and killed 60 of his 65 chickens. His Liberty Bonds and War Savings Bonds were also  lost in the fire. This is the second severe blow for him.   Feb 27, 1919

J.W. Stewart of Reliance went to Mitchell the first of the week for treatment. It was first thought that he had typhoid fever, but has been found to be a pronounced case of meningitis. There is little hope for recovery.  Aug. 2, 1919
