Wiliam BALLANCE b. Ireland about 1841 with his parents and 9 other siblings and settles in Marlborough Township, Carleton County, Ontario. He marries Jane Perrin and has 4 daughters in the Burritt's Rapids area of Carleton or Grenville counties. After 1877, he moves to the Dakotas, taking up land in McCook County. The family is in the 1880 Census and the Federal Land Records McCook County South Dakota show this entry: BALLANCE WILLIAM 05 103N 055W 015 160 272002 PA 4521 03/10/1887210. His daughter Rachel marries George Byron Truesdell in Hutchison, Kansas in 1891. From there, I lose the family. The children are: Mary Ann b.1871; Rachel Emma b. 1872; Harriett Etta b. 1875 and Eliza Jane b. 1877. I don't know if there were any further children born after they left Canada. I would like to hear from anyone who is connected or can provide information on what happened to this family. Thank you.

Hello! I am just beginning a search for any info on my mother's family from Spencer in McCook county. Her parents were Henry Kruse who was born in May 24, 1871 and her mother was Matilda Janke born October 10, 1872 in Baraboo, Wisconsin. My mother Nora and her twin sister Ella were born on April 6, 1904 in Spencer. Henry owned the hardware store in Spencer. Other children of Henry and Matilda were Selma, Esther, Wallace, Arnold, Pauline, and Edna. A twin brother to Arnold was killed in a car crash when he was about 15. There were two Lutheran churches in Spencer, one was the High German and the other the low. Henry went to one and Matilda took the children to the other. Henry Kruse was the son of John H. Kruse and Caroline Schievelbein. Henry had a single sister named Sophie. After being widowed, John later married the sister of Caroline Schievelbein and had one other wife as he was widowed twice. Any info on the family or on suggested contacts I could make would be appreciated. I see that both John and Henry are listed in the names of early ancestors in McCook county.

Hello,

I am seeking a birth announcement for Benjamin Morrison CASTLE who was born 8 Oct 1893 In McCook County, SD to Charles K. CASTLE (1867-1935) and Una Emaline PARDEE (1870-1956). Benjamin was my Uncle and we have been unable to get a birth certificate for him so we thought perhaps there would be a birth announcement in one of the local papers. My father, Donald H. CASTLE was also born in McCook County on 12 Jan 1902 and I do have an announcement of his birth from the Montrose Herald, Jan 17, 1902 edition, p.5, column 1.

A nice boy, weight seven pounds, is reported by Dr. Spencer to have arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Castle Sunday evening.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and if there is any charge for this query, please let me know and I will send a check.

Sincerely, Maureen Castle Hodgson

We are looking for any information on a McCarthy family living in
McCook County, South Daota, near Salem, from about 1885 to roughly
1895, but not after 1900.
A 1934 obituary of Margaret McCarthy Cota [my wife's grandmother],
who died in Dubuque, Iowa, lists her birth date as Sept. 19, 1886, in
Salem, South Dakota. She was one of 4 daughters--Margaret,
Josephine, Mary, and Anna--whose parents died sometime before 1900
and who were taken to live with relatives in Iowa. The 1900 US
Census for Allamakee County shows Margaret and Anna living with an
uncle, James McCarthy; we have not been able to determine with whom
Josephine and Mary were living.
Regrettably, no one now knows the given names of the McCarthy parents
and without these names, the McCook County Register of Deeds cannot
look up any possible birth records for the girls. We also have no
death record and do not know how or when the parents of the 4 girls
died. so far, a survey of the Salem Register newspaper has not
turned up any information.
We do have a land record that a Timothy McCarthy purchased 160 acres
of land in McCook County on April 21, 1888, but we do not know if
this is the father of the two girls, and a Timothy McCarthy also
purchased land in Charles Mix County, South Dakota, at about the same
time, and this Timothy McCarthy definitely is not the father of these
4 girls.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Jon Butler

Am interested in finding out if a Michael Flaherty was living and farming in Montrose, McCook Co., SD around 1920-1930ish.  He may have died there but I don't know the name of any Catholic cemeteries in Montrose to check with.  He was born in Ireland in 1843, had lived in Linn Co., Iowa up to about 1918.  Heard he was farming in Montrose after that.  He isn't buried in Linn Co, Iowa with his wife who died in 1879, so maybe he's buried in Montrose.  Thank you so very much.  Cynthia  [email protected]

I'm hoping someone can help me: I'm looking for information on the Bilow family. My great grandmother was 'Effie' Bilow born about 1880. Effie could be a middle name or nickname. Bilow could be an English version of Beaulieu, Boileau, etc.. Effie was said to have been of French descent.  She married
my great grandfather, Lancelot Neil Barkley of the German Barkley's of Dundas Co. Ontario,Canada about 1900. I have located French Bilow's in Dundas, but have yet to find any 'Effie'. Their 5 children were named:

Olive
&  Harold (Bud).

If anyone has similar names in their tree or if anyone can give me ANY info on the Bilow's, Beaulieu's, Boileau's etc. please contact me. Everything about Effie
is a mystery.

Thank you.

BOLIN-SUTTON: I am looking for information (birth & death dates, children, and where they are buried) about Letitia A. SUTTON married William BOLIN/BOLEN. Letitia was born in Rush County, Indiana on May 29, 1852 to Jacob and Nancy A. (DURGIN) Sutton. I have no information at all on William. The only tie to him I have is a line from John Harvey Sutton's (Letitia's brother and my GG GF) biographical story in The History of Northwest Missouri, "The children born to Jacob and Nancy A. Sutton were as follows: John Harvey, of this review, .......,Letitia A., who married William Bolen, of Spencer, South Dakota;". I am assuming the name was actually Bolin as I could not find any Bolen's in Harrison or Davies Counties, Missouri, at that time. There were some Bowen's, however. I also notice there were several Bowen's in the graduating classes listed on the McCook County web page. I suppose it could have been BOWEN. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My Grandfather Victor NELSON was born in McCook County in 1893. His parents Johann and Brita Nelson moved to McCook County, five miles south of Canova, just across the McCook County line from Miner County in 1878 and lived there for 27 years before moving to Idaho in 1905. The Nelson's lived in Iowa for a few years after immigrating from Sweden before moving to S. Dakota. Johann's sister was Maria SAMMUELSON who lived next door. Johann built a house in McCook county with two chimneys and we have a family photo taken in front of the house. We'll be driving through that area on May 5-7 and would love to find the old place if anyone can give us a clue to its location. Neighbors mentioned in family history include BROWN, Skogland, Weisenberg and Ericsons. Thanks for any help you can offer.

CURRIER, Benjamin Moses - he was my great-great-great-grandfather. He died January 9, 1881 and was buried in Bridgewater but in 1905 his remains were moved to Minnesota. He had one son, Deacon Thomas, but from there until Benjamin Moses Currier, there is a gap which I have not been able to fill. Any help/suggestions/information would be greatly appreciated. My great-aunt, Nathalie EBERLEIN (1870/71-?), married a Gustave Carl Georg PLUDEMAN (?-?) in Shawano, WI on 30 August 1906. Nathalie's mother's obituary in 1906 indicated that Mrs. G. C. PLUDEMAN was living in Montrose, South Dakota. Are there any town/county directories for 1906? Indexes to state of federal censuses? Any information or advise from savy genealogists would be very welcome. Thank you.

Looking for information on a family by the name of ELFERT who may have taken care of my grandmother, Mary/Mamie WALPOLE in the mid to late 1880's. Mary was b. Jul 1881, Cheyenne, WY to an "unknown" Walpole and Sarah Franklin. Her father abandoned the family and her mother was unable to raise her. I have found "ELFERTH" in the 1880 census in McCook Co. however, not successful in finding any other information. As the story goes, Mary's mother, Sarah, remarried an "unknown" GOWLING and took Mary back. My father's middle name was ELFERT and he would remember the mention of Salem, but that is about it. Thanks in advance to any one who can help.
