Montrose City Cemetery at Montrose, South Dakota
Montrose was established as a farming support town on the banks of the Vermillion River in the early 1880's, and with only a half dozen residents had its first 4th of July celebration in 1880. It had a store, a boarding house, a livery stable, and a hardware store at that time. It became a vibrant community and many celebrations were held on the main street shown in the photo below which is probably from about 1900.
| The railroad that ran from Sioux Falls to Mitchell
came through in the fall of 1880 and Montrose had an assured future.
A lumber yard was built and a medical doctor arrived who shortly
after died and is reportedly the first person buried in Montrose
Cemetery.
Montrose is an excellent example of a thriving small community totally involved in and dependent on the agricultural life which grew faster than the bindweed which was introduced by the early colonists. In later years the stalwart citizens have continued to provide necessary services to the community even with the reduced numbers of farm families to operate the always larger farms and the readiness of travel opportunities to nearby larger cities. |

The cemetery is well cared for and the small white flowers across the lawns can only add to the broad prairie vistas of the surrounding countryside.

alphabetic order. This
listing also gives the date of birth and date of death when available.
Unfortunately, those burials without grave
markers are not generally included
because the official burial list was not available at this time.
