Brief
History:
This county is
situated in the southeastern part of the
Territory, on the Minnesota State line,
and contains
about 528 square miles, or 337,920
acres. The Big Sioux river passes through
the county near the centre,
and several small streams flow into
it within the county. There are a few
email lakes in the southwestern
part Very little natural growth
timber is found, but many young trees are
being planted by the farmers, and
already many fine groves are
becoming a conspicuous feature.
Flandreau, the county seat, is
situated on the banks of the Big Sioux
river, which affords one of the very
finest water-powers in Southeastern
Dakota, and presents a magnificent opening
for the establishment of
productive manufacturing
enterprises.
