LEMMON: A town is located just south of the North Dakota border in the Northeast part of Perkins County. It is the namesake of G.E."Ed" Lemmon, who owned a large ranch in the area. He is credited by the National Livestock Association with handling the largest number of cattle in a lifetime---one million---and for cutting, roping, and bringing to the branding iron the largest number of cattle in one day--more than 900 head. A successful rancher, Lemmon also helped fouond one of the last towns established in South Dakota.

Lemmon is the site of a large park dedicated soley to petrified wood and fossils.  The Lemmon Petrified Wood Park at 500 Main Avenue features more than 400 unusual structures constructed from spicimens fund within a 25 mile radious of Lemmon.  Nearly all the items displayed form spires, castles, pyramids, or other whimiscal shapes.  From 1930 to 1932, the park was the pet project of O. S. Quammen.  He wanted to learn more about petrified wood, created a public display of the fossils, and provided work to unemployed men during the Depression.
