On Friday, February 8th, occurred the marriage of Miss Leona Burtz and Elmer Best at the Baptist parsonage in Witten, S.D., where Rev. H. S. Wold spoke the words gthat made the two people husband and wife. Both young people have resided in Greenwood since early childhood and are well and favorably known by many people, who wish them prosperity and happiness through life. Burtz, William and Beverly Helen Bailey -- September 2, 1951 Wedding Date

Beverly Helen, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Clifford E. Bailey, became the bride of William Burtz, son of Mr. & Mrs. Chas. Burtz, Sunday, September 2, at 6 o'clock in the evening, at the farm where they will make their home, known as the Albert Anderson farm. Rev. Curtis Gatson, of the Baptist church of Witten, performed the single ring ceremony.

The bride wore a white nylon street length dress with a corsage of valeria gladiolas. Her jewelry was a matching pin and earrings, a gift from the groom.

The matron of honor, Berniece Burtz, wore an aqua crepe dress with pink and white gladiola corsage.

The groom wore a grey sharkskin suit and the best man, his brother Raymond, wore a blue sharkskin suit. Each wore a white boutonniere.

Burtz, Earl and Miss Marian Best -- September 14, 1946 Wedding Date

Miss Marian Best, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd R. Best, of Witten, and Earl Burtz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Burtz, of Winner, were married at 11 o'clock Saturday morning, September 14th in the Baptist parsonage at Witten, Rev. C. L. Gatson officiated.

The bride was becomingly attired in an afternoon dress of net over pink taffeta. The sleeves were puffed and a tiny ruffle adorned the neckline being caught at the front with a flower. Her accessories were white and her corsage was of roses, mums and lilies.

Miss Dorothy Best, sister of the bride, was bridesmaid. She also wore net over pink taffeta with white accessories. Her corsage was the same as the bride's. Glenn Gardner, of Witten, was bestman.

After the ceremony a wedding dinner was served at the home of the bride's parents. Mrs. LeRoy Harrison, aunt of the bride, assisted with the dinner.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Burtz are graduates of Witten high school. Mr. Burtz, who entered the Service in February, 1942, received his discharge in November, 1945. He served 30 months overseas.

Mrs. Burtz chose for her going-away outfit a grey pin-striped suit and white accessories.

Upon their return from a honeymoon to trip to Sheridan, Wyo., and points in Idaho, they will make their home on the bridegroom's ranch in Greenwood township. ~Winner Advocate, Winner, SD, Sept 1946

Burtz, Raymond F. and Miss O. Berniece Ruf -- June 20, 1948 Wedding Date

Miss O. Berniece Ruf, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. John Ruf of St. Paul, Nebr., became the bride of Raymond F. Burtz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Burtz, of Winner, at 4:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon, June 20, in the presence of relatives and friends.

Rev. John Ruf, father of the bride, performed the double ring ceremony in the home of the bride's parents. The home was beautifully decorated with blue and white streamers, potted plants and bouquets and baskets of flowers.

Before the ceremony, Rev. Eugene Olson, of Ord, Nebr., sang "Because" and "Oh, Promise Me," and Mrs. Olson sang, "Can Christ Be Seen In Us." Mrs. Elmer Christensen, of Dannebrog, Nebr., played the wedding march.

The bride chose for her wedding, a white satin gown, with a long train edged in lace, made with a sweetheart neckline, fitted bodice trimmed in orange blossoms and long tapered sleeves. Her finger-tip veil was gathered to a tiara trimmed in orange blossoms. Her only jewelry was a pearl necklace. She carried a white Bible, on which, was a corsage of red roses.

Miss Ardell Curry, of Newcastle, Nebr., a room mate of the bride while attending Omaha Bible Institute, was maid-of-honor. She wore a floor length gown of pink marquisette over taffeta, made with a sweetheart neckline edged in self ruffle. Her corsage was of pink roses. Miss Lee Ann Burtz, of Fremont, trainbearer, was gowned in organdy trimmed in blue ribbon.

The bridegroom wore a brown suit with chalk stripe and his attendant, Wm. Burtz, of Winner wore a suit of brown gabardine. They both wore a red rose boutonniere.

After the ceremony a lovely luncheon was served cafeteria style. The wedding cake was topped with miniature bride and groom. Moving pictures were taken of the wedding.

For her going away outfit, the bride chose an ensemble of sky-blue rayon crepe with white accessories.

The bride is a graduate of Dannebrog high school with the class of 1944 and of the Omaha Bible Institute with the class of 1948.

The groom is a graduate of Witten high school and is engaged in farming and ranching where they will be at home to their friends after July 10th on the ranch, 32 miles north-west of Winner.

Burtz, LeRoy C. and Miss Florence Sterling -- October 12th

On Thursday evening October the 12th occurred the marriage of Miss Florence Sterling, daughter of Mrs. Lena Sterling to LeRoy C. Burtz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Burtz of Winner. The marriage was performed by Rev. H. S. Wold of Witten. The attendants were Miss Marcella Burtz, sister of the groom and Harvey Sterling, brother of the bride. The bride wore a dress of navy blue ruff crepe trimmed with ecru lace. The maid of honor was attired in blue of a lighter tint. Both the groom and the best man wore the conventional blue. Harter, Amos and Irene Burtz -- September 12

On Wednesday, September the 12th, a very pretty home wedding took place at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Burtz of Greenwood township, when their eldest daughter, Irene, was married to Mr. Amos Harter of Witten. About three o'clock in the afternoon, a few of the nearest friends and relatives of the contracting parties were gathered together, and Rev. H. S. Wold of Witten soon spoke the words that made the two young people husband and wife. After the ceremony the company sat down to a very bounteous supper, while happiness and good cheer ruled supreme.

Both Mr. & Mrs. Amos Harter are among our most esteemed and industrious young people. We all bespeak for them great success in life, and wish them an abundance of joy. ~The Winner Advocate --date unknown

Nelson, Lee and Delores Sterling -- May 27, 1951 Wedding Date

A lovely wedding was solemnized Sunday, May 27, at the First Baptist church at 2 p.m. when Delores Sterling, daughter of Mrs. Lena Sterling, of Winner, became the bride of Lee Nelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Art Nelson, of Lucas.

The single ring ceremony was performed by Rev. Howard D. Berglund.

The bride wore a gown of white Marquistte trimmed in lace over satin. The bodice was a bertha effect with two ruffles of lace. The long sleeves ended in points. The full skirt was gathered at the waist and ended in a train. The front of the skirt was pulled back with two bows, revealing rows of ruffles. Her finger tip veil was held in place with a pearl and net tiara.

She wore pearls, a gift of the groom, and carried a colonial bouquet of yellow carnations and lavender sweet peas.

The bride was given away by her brother, Wesley Sterling, of Kellogg, Idaho.

Lula Mae Tiford of Bonesteel, was bridesmaid and wore a yellow moire taffeta gown with matching headdress. She carried a colonial bouquet of yellow carnations.

Earl Reckling, of Fairfax, was best man. He and the groom wore suits of gray-blue and had white carnation boutonnieres.

The bride's mother wore a grey suit with matching accessories. Her corsage was yellow carnations and lavender sweet peas. Mrs. Nelson, mother of the groom, wore a gray silk print dress with a corsage of yellow carnations and lavender sweet peas.

Ushers were Elsie Sterling, sister of the bride, who wore a lavender taffeta and net gown and Marilyn Burtz, of Fremont, niece of the bride, who wore a yellow taffeta and net gown. Both wore corsages of yellow carnations.

Soloist was Mrs. Howard Berglund who sang "Because" and "O Perfect Love." She wore a floor length gown of yellow net and a corsage of yellow carnations. Her accompanist was Betty Bice, Ideal, who a lavender satin and net gown. The guest book was in charge of Helen Rowe, of Witten. She wore a lavender linen cape dress.

The church was beautifully decorsated with lilacs and yellow tulips, in keeping with the bride's colors, lavender and yellow.

Immediately following the ceremony a reception was held at the church for 85 guests. Those who served were Donna Bailey, Mrs. Don Tuttle, Mrs. F.O. Burkett, Mrs. LeRoy Koepp, and Mrs. Fred Scharer.

For going-away the bride wore a suit of gray with yellow blouse and white accessories.

Sterling, Harvey and Marcella M. Burtz -- August 22nd

A pretty wedding occurred at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Burtz in Greenwood township at seven o'clock p.m. Thursday, August 22nd, when their daughter, Marcella M. Burtz, was united in marriage to Harvey Sterling, son of Mrs. Lena Sterling, of Curlew township. Rev. H. S. Wold, of Witten, officiated, using the ring ceremony. LeRoy Burtz, brother of the bride, and Mrs. LeRoy Burtz, sister of the groom, were attendants.

The bride wore a wine silk crepe dress with matching accessories. The maid of honor, Mrs. LeRoy Burtz, was dressed in flowered chiffon. the groom wore gray and the best man, LeRoy Burtz, wore blue.

Mrs. Sterling is well known, as she has lived in this community always. She has been a successful teacher in the schools of Tripp and Mellette counties for the past few years. The groom holds a responsible position with the station hospital at Fort Meade, S.D.

A wedding supper was served following the ceremony. Those present were: Mrs. Mary Burtz, Miss Ruth Burtz, Mr. & Mrs. Claude Fewell and sons, Mr. & Mrs. B. Fewell and daughters, and Clarence Levart, all of Happy, Texas; Rev. Wold and family of Witten; Mrs. Lena Sterling and children, Mr. & Mrs. Amos Harter and family, and Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Best and family.

Mr. and Mrs. Sterling left on a wedding trip to the Black Hills. Their many friends wish them happiness and success through life. ~The Winner Advocate, date unknown

Walters, William and Elsie Sterling -- December 30, 1956 Wedding Date

Elsie Sterling Becomes Bride of Wm. Walters

A lovely wedding was solemnized Sunday, Dec. 30, at the First Baptist church when Elsie Sterling, daughter of Mrs. Lena Sterling of Winner, became the bride of William Walters, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Walters, of Winner.

The double ring ceremony was performed by the Rev. Melvin Crane. Nuptial music was played by Mrs. Carrie Meyers, who was accompanist for Elaine Harter who sang "Because" and the "Wedding Prayer." Sanctuary of the church was filled with baskets of gladiolas and chrysanthemums, and was centered with a Christmas tree.

The bride, given in marriage by her brother-in-law, Lee Nelson, of Gregory, wore a ballerina length gown of Schiffli embroidered nylon tulle. The full skirt of embroidered tulle fell over layers of tulle with a wide ruffle of tulle at the bottom. The bodice was accented with a wing collar. The veil, decorated with pearls, was elbow length. She carried a bouquet of carnations and roses. The bride carried out the tradition of something borrowed and something blue.

The matron of honor, Mrs. James Rolfs of Wayne, Nebr., niece of the bride, wore a waltz length gown of aqua nylon chiffon over taffeta. The dress featured a bouifant skirt and shirred bodice. Fastened to the shoulder drape was a swept back panel of flowing chiffon. She wore matching hat and mitts. Her corsage was of pink carnations and white roses.

The bride's mother wore a black dress flecked with and black accessories. The bridegroom's mother wore a grey suit with matching accessories. Both had corsages of roses and carnations.

Following the wedding ceremony, a reception was held for 180 guests. Mission Circle of the church served refreshments. The bride's chosen colors, white and aqua, were carried out in decorations of the church parlors.

A three-tiered wedding cake, topped with the traditional miniature wedding couple, was baked by Mrs. Ted Nelson. Leeann Burtz of Ames, Nebr., was in charge of the guest book. Karen Burtz, also of Ames, and Mrs. Merle Harter arranged gifts. Mrs. LeRoy Burtz of Ames and Mrs. Lee Nelson of Gregory, sisters of the bride, cut the wedding cake; Mrs. Ted Nelson was at the coffee table.

Immediately following the reception, the newlyweds left on a wedding trip to Nebraska.

For her going away outfit, the bride wore a white flecked aqua sheath dress accented with hip pockets. A matching bolero with three-quarter sleeves and back accessories completed the ensemble.

The bride, a graduate of Winner high school, is employed at the Ben Franklin store. Mr. and Mrs. Walters will make their home in Winner.
