Cathi Darby Stephens (artcathistep@earthlink.net) Thu Feb 18 09:07:41 1999
DARBY - STUART My ancestor, Francis Gore DARBY, was born 11 August 1803 in St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada and he married Elizabeth D. FERGUSON on 9 Feb 1831 in Queenston, Canada. Their children were; George born 1831 in St. Catherines and Charlotte E. born 4 May 1837 in St. Catherines. The family left Ontario for Macomb Co., MI arriving in the early 1850's. Their son George DARBY married Huldah MYRES in 1853 Macomb Co., MI and their daughter, Charlotte E., married George W. STUART in 1856 in Lapeer Co., MI. Their mother Elizabeth D. (FERGUSON) DARBY died in Lapeer Co., MI in 1876 and son George died there in 1882. It was then (abt. 1883) that Charlotte D. (DARBY) STUART and her husband and children moved to Walworth Co., SD and her father went with them. Francis Gore DARBY died in Adams Twp., Walworth Co., SD on 14 July 1897. I am told that he had applied for land (paperwork did not come until after his death), and that when he died he was buried on the land of George W. STUART in or near Adams Twp. Years later when the property was sold apparently a new farmer plowed over the grave site. Is it possible that there may have been a newspaper publishing obituary's at that time - 14 July 1897? Charlotte E. (DARBY) STUART died on 9 Sept 1913 in Mobridge, Walworth Co. and George STUART died on 28 Oct 1911 in Java(?). Their son, James Aaron STUART, b. 9 Nov 1856 MI, died 2 Feb 1942 in Bowdle, Edmunds Co., SD. James had been married to #1 Lilly FOX, and #2 Elizabeth NATHAN. I have references to this family living in Ordway and Roscoe.

I am looking my greatgrandfather,Lee DERBEN, He was married to Lillian May BATTLES. The family history is that he was killed in a wagon accident in Walworth county. This accident also brought on early labor to Lillian and she delivered a premie, my grandmother,Nellie Adele DERBEN. Her birth date is Nov. 26, 1888. I would say that the accident happened around this date. Lillian parents, George and Jane BATTLES, and some sibblings where also in the area. This I found on the internet about a list of members for a Methodist Episcopal Church founded Feb. 7,1886 in Bangor, Walworth, SD. The list was dated for 1888.

My gfather John Haggerty DONAGHY, by tradition, has been linked to STANDING HOLY,b. abt. 1878, dau of SITTING BULL. He traveled to Walworth Co. in 1901, staying for abt 4 years, before returning home to VA. Two of my aunts found letters years later where they had communicated-and promptly burned them and would not tell the rest of the family what they contained. All that generation is now gone and I would genuinely be proud to know if I might have some relatives in SD.

I am researching my wife's family. I believe that Andrew HEGEDUS who lived in Selby, South Dakota could be the brother of my wife's grandmother. Andrew HEGEDUS was born in November of 1885/1886 and died in 1970. He was born in Hungary. He lived at one time in Youngstown, Ohio. I do not find any records of him staying in Ohio. I am hoping that a descendant will be able to confirm that this Andrew HEGEDUS is the brother of Lidia HEGEDUS. Lidia died in 1916 and her children were adopted and all contact was lost with the HEGEDUS family. We would be thrilled to contact a descendant and reunite the family. Any help would be appreciated. I'm looking for information on two FREIMARK children who may have died in Walworth County between 1885 and 1895. Their names were Katherine B: 1890 and Magdaline B: 1883. Thee were part of a family of fourteen children belonging to Ernst and Elizabeth Freimark who emmigrated to South Dakota from Russia in 1876. Six of the fourteen children died in Campbell County over the winter of 1894/95 - six others came to Canada in 1901 with their mother Elizabeth and her second husband George FISCHER after Ersnt died in 1900. Would any one have maps or photos of Scranton, SD name change to South LaBeau later. In using some imagery of the area I've found what looks like, on an old map I use, an old cemetery in the same spot on the imagery. Also, I see some thing that looks like side walks west of there, on the other side of a dam and pond. There was a triangular rail road turn around for the Minneapolis-St. Paul railroad next to it. This is about a mile north of where the USGS GNIS puts the coordinates of the town. It's about 2.5 miles south of where I have LeBeau marked. --------------------------------------------------

BERG, HUBBARD, WAAGE, RODBERG: I am looking for information on Thomas and Marie Berg who according to the 1920 census were shopkeepers in Mobridge. They had two children: Ragna and Karlotte or Charlotte who were just a few years old at the time. Also listed in a Lorene Hubbard (probably Lorraine Hubbard age 19 as a niece). I am interested because I feel that this could be Marie Waage Hubbard Berg who was married to Howard Hubbard in Forest City Iowa. They had one daughter in 1901, Lorraine. And Marie's parents Peder and Kari Waage as well as brothers Sivert and Arne, and later her sister Rachel Folkestad lived in Mobridge. Kari, Peder, Sivert and Arne are buried at the Greenwood cemetary. Any info that would help would be great. Marie was my great grandmother's first and second cousin, first through her mother who was Kari's sister, and second through her father who was Peder first cousin. According to some of my aunts and uncles, they thought grandpa had some brothers in South Dakota, North Dakota and possibly Montanna. I hope somebody can help me and Thank You.

Olson, Martinus and Anna LEGANGER OLSON, Immigrated from Stavnger abt 1880, with four of their 8 children. Their son Andrew Paul OLSON was the first white child born in Walworth County, then Indian Territory, Sept. 19, 1882. Anna died in 1923 and Martinus about 1931. I would love to trace his family in Norway, and find out his parents names. His wife's parents were the Kolbein Peterson's. Any early info would be appreciated.

I am searching for helen BACHHUBER. I have her in the 1920 Walworth County census (Whitewater)but can't find her after that. She didn't marry until 1931 so her name should still be Bachhuber in 1930 (often horribly misspelled). Her dates are 9 Jul 1900-26 Jun 1998. Thanks

I am looking for information of the WACKER family. I found John C. WACKER (b. 11-1841 in Russia)in the 1900 census for Hiddenwood Township, District 344 of Walworth County, SD. This census lists John, his wife Barbara (b. 1847, a 19 year old son Fredrick and 14 year old daughter Emma. They imigrated from Russia in 1889. There is a Wacker twp in northern McIntosh county and wonder if the naming of this twp has a connection to this family. Any clues would be greatly appreciated.

GAUGHAN: Patricia Ann GAUGHAN birthdate about 1935 ++ possibly lived in Mobridge, SD at one time, graduated from Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas in 1958. I am a TWU classmate trying to make contact with Pat to tell her about the 50th reunion of our class which will be held at TWU in April 2008. I have searched so many genealogy sites hoping to find Pat, but so far I have not been successful. It is so hard to find female classmates if one does not know their married name. If anyone out there knows how to contact Pat, I would appreciate hearing from you at dbuhr@socal.rr.com
