Submitted by Kelly McCarnley Source: Freeman Courier Thursday January 10, 1924 No. 30 Jacob Stolp - Sad news struck a responsive chord of sympathy in the bosom of all residents of Freeman were made known last Friday Jan. 4th and read: Grim Death stretched out his icy hand and hurried away with the life of our respected citizen and dutiful officer Jacob Stolp in the prime of life. Until recently robust and strong, this night watch man was ever to be found on his post of duty serving without fear or favor. His kindly smile and friendly greeting will never be forgotten in Freeman. Jacob Stolp was born in Rosenberg, Russia, Feb. 22 1859 and came to Dakota Territory at the age of 18. In the year of 1887 he was united in holy wedlock with Carolina Hornig of Emery, S.D. This marriage was blessed with five sons of whom Fred of Freeman, Herman of Arizona, William of Ft. Wayne and Rudolph, Lutheran parochial school teacher of Decatur, Ind. Spent their boyhood in Freeman where the Stolp family has lived 26 years. The deceased was a man of sterling character and blameless conduct. Faithfully at his side toiled his beloved wife sharing with her dear husband not merely the joys and sorrows of life but also his Christian faith and supporting him in his righteous endeavors. The St. Paul Lutheran church of which Mr. Stolp was a member experienced the painful loss of an energetic church worker and conscientious elder. The dread melody that caused a life of usefulness for church and for country to come to an abrupt close was trichinosis with apoplexy. The host of mourners friends and citizens attending the funeral services on Wednesday, the bounteous floral offerings evidenced that the departed was held in high esteem. In the funeral sermon delivered by Rev. C. H. Steffen just tribute was paid for the commendable services rendered by the deceased as citizen, church member and officer. The life of such a Christian man in his home, in church, in the community is worthy of imitation and all in their sphere and realm should likewise draw strength from God's holy word as did he who stands before them as example. To the mother who sits in sorrow where his footsteps never again shall echo and to the children we extend our deepest sympathy.
