DEATH OF JOHN HARRIS

He Passed to His Reward Sunday Evening After Illness of a Few Weeks

The death of John Harris occurred at his home in Aberdeen last evening, the cause being a hemorrhage of the lungs. For the past two or three years during which Mr. Harris had resided in Aberdeen, he had been in comparatively good health until a few weeks ago, a recurrence of an old lung difficulty came, since which he had been failing. He had a number of hemorrhages, each of which left him weaker. The attack which resulted fatally was a particularly severe one, and was internal as well as external. The deceased formerly resided at Mellette, where he retained farming interests.

John Harris was born in Maryland on March 3, 1846, and he was therefore just 55 years of age on the date of his death. When a child he was taken to Wisconsin with his parents. He grew up there and was married at the age of 21 to Miss Eliza Arzella Parkinson. About twenty-five years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Harris removed to southern Minnesota, where they lived for about seven years, when they came to the then territory of Dakota and settled near Mellette in Spink county, where they continued to reside until two years ago last fall, when Mr. Harris bought property in Aberdeen, since which they had lived here.

Thirteen children were born to them, all of whom, except two, are still living, seven sons and four daughters. All the children live in this state except a married daughter whose home is in Wisconsin. The deceased was of a deep religious nature and from early childhood manifested a particular interest in matters pertaining to the church. He joined the Methodist church when a young man and lived a consistent Christian life. He filled many of the church offices in different places in which he lived and the different churches with which he was connected, and next to his home the church was the object most dear to his heart.

The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon. There will be a brief service at the residence at 2 o’clock, after which the funeral party will proceed to the Methodist church, where the services will take place at 2:30, Rev. N. A. Swickard officiating.
