PIONEER CALLED BY DEATH

L. J. Ives; who came to Brown county in 1880, Succumbs to Pneumonia Attack

L. J. Ives, a pioneer of Brown county, died at his home four miles northeast of Aberdeen, on Saturday evening, aged 75 years, his death having been caused by pneumonia. Mr. Ives was born at Wellsboro, Pa., in 1836. He was married to Caroline Seeley in 1857, and in 1864 emigrated to Minnesota, where Mrs. Ives died in 1869.

In 1872 he married again, at Winona, Min., his second wife being Helen M. Rhodes, who survives him, together with six children, Mrs. E. G. Anderson of Aberdeen; W. G. Ives of New Underwood, S.D,. Mrs. J. A. McKenzie, Mrs. A. F. Altman and Harold Ives of Aberdeen, and H. R. Ives of Cresbard, the two former being the children of his first wife.

The funeral will be held at the Christian church in Aberdeen on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, a short service at the home of Mrs. J. A. McKenzie, at 2 o’clock, preceding the public service at the church. Mr. Ives was well and favorably known throughout Brown county, and his death came as a great surprise to many of his acquaintances, who did not know of his illness.

About a month ago he was seized with an attack of pneumonia, but had apparently recovered, and on Thursday of last week he felt so well he drove to Aberdeen and spent some time talking to old friends on the streets. The air was cool, and he became chilled through. He returned home, and by the time he reached there his condition was serious, and he grew rapidly worse until the end came on Saturday evening.

Two brothers, John Ives of Fairchild, Wis., and James Ives of Westpike, Pa., survive him. All the children are here for the funeral.
