Obituary

The death of Hon. C. D. Jones, of Bath, from pneumonia at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21st, 1893, was a great shock to the community in which he lived and to all friends and acquaintances, of which he had a great many, in this part of the state. His sickness was something less than a week in duration, but its character created the gravest fears from the first. His age was 42, and he left a wife and infant daughter and a number of other immediate relatives, one of whom, Miss Anna Jones, a sister, is a teacher in the city schools of Aberdeen.

The funeral services were held at the residence, near Bath, at 1 o’clock, Thursday, Nov. 23rd, and were largely attended, the friends of the deceased and his bereaved family coming from long distances to pay the last respects which the living can give the dead. The services were conducted by Rev. Morris, of Powell City, Edmunds county, Rev. Jno. K. Roberts, of Spain, S. D., and Rev. MacDuffee, of Columbia, and were most appropriate and impressive.

Charles D. Jones was born in Akron, Ohio, in 1850, but removed at an early age with his parents to Winnebago county, Wisconsin. He located in Bath Township twelve years ago. And was one of the largest and most successful farmers in the county. He was popular with all classes and in 1890, after the most exciting and hotly contested campaign ever held in the county, was elected to the lower house of the legislature, serving one term with much credit.

His circle of acquaintances was wide, and all who knew him were his friends. He was possessed of a nature open and generous, honorable and upright, that commanded universal love and respect. That a man of his stalwart proportions, in the very prime of life, should be cut off so suddenly calls to mind most vividly the uncertainties of human existence. His young wife has the sympathy of all in her sore affliction.
