BROWN CO. PIONEER DIES AT LEOLA

Mrs. Frank S. Pierce, Well Known Here In Early Days, Is Dead

Word has reached here of the death of Mrs. Frank S. Pierce of Leola, a Brown county pioneer who came here in 1882 and resided on a claim near Ordway for many years.

The Leola Herald prints the following account of her death: “At her home in Leola, last Monday morning at 8:40 o’clock, Mrs. Frank Pierce passed on to her reward.

“For the past three years Mrs. Pierce had been a sufferer from periodical attacks of stomach trouble, but her general health had been as good as usual up to Sunday morning when she was suddenly taken with an acute attack of her old complaint. She was ill only about twenty-four hours, but suffered terribly during that time up to within a few hours of her death.

“Mrs. Pierce was born in Lamberth, Canada, on March 19, 1859. She came to South Dakota in 1882, and located on a claim in Brown county, later coming to McPherson county, and on April 26, 1894, she was married to Frank Pierce.

“Deceased leaves a bereaved husband and son in Leola and a half sister in Canada to mourn her loss.

“The funeral was held in the Methodist church on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. The little church was crowded with the many friends who came to pay their last respects to a beloved neighbor and friend. And the beautiful floral display showed in what respect she was held by those who knew her. Rev. George M. Carter, pastor of the Federated Congregation of Leola, preached the funeral sermon. Interment was made in Green Mound cemetery.”
