Aberdeen Daily News Monday, Dec 06, 1897

Mrs. Mary J. Gard, beloved wife of John Gard, for a good many years a well known resident of the city, died at 1 o’clock this morning, Monday, December 6th, aged 60 years. Her illness extended through ten days or more, and hope of her recovery was practically surrendered several days ago. A stubborn bowel disease resisted all efforts for alleviation and was the cause of death.

Mrs. Gard’s maiden name was Baxter. She was married at Moscow, Ia., in March, 1866, to Mr. Gard and bore him three children, only one of whom, Orville Gard, a popular young man of the city, survives her. She resided in Dakota several years, and has a sister, Mrs. Martha Comer, living at Northville, Spink county. Other near relatives are a brother, Jos. R. Baxter, a resident of Rhodes, Ia., and another sister, Mrs. Lizzie Herron, of Clay City, Ill.

The funeral services are to be held at the residence, corner of State street and Fiftth avenue, tonight at 7 o’clock. Rev. Dr. Swickard will conduct them. The remains will be taken to Northville in the morning for burial by the side of Mrs. Gard’s mother. Mrs. Gard was a member of the M. E. church. She was a good neighbor and a loving wife and mother, and her death has sadly stricken her household and causes a great grief among many acquaintances.
