Edwin Barnhart, the 23 year old son of Jacob and Elizabeth Barnhart, of this city, was drowned in the river east of Ordway Sunday afternoon. The sad affair happened about a mile below Jenne’s bridge.
The deceased went to the river to fish in company with a number of men, women and children. After enjoying the sport for a season he with other young fellows in the party went down the river for a considerable distance and went in swimming. While crossing the river he was taken with cramps and sank in eight feet of water.
His companions endeavored to save him but were powerless to do so. They then ran up to Jenne’s bridge, secured assistance and a boat and managed to raise the body after it had been under water for two hours or more. It was brought to this city and interred yesterday afternoon, Rev. W. H. Selleck conducting the funeral services at the M. E. church. The unfortunate young man had been a resident of the state about two years and had a farm and other property in Edmunds county.
