The Aberdeen Area Genealogical Society, and the associated Alexander Mitchell Public Library, should be one of your first stops if you are beginning research in Brown County. They have a variety of records and source material, along with knowledgeable and helpful staff and volunteers.

The library has a Heritage Room dedicated to local history and genealogy in a large section of the lower level of the library. The Heritage Room contains card files of obituaries from Aberdeen and surrounding areas, copies of many old newspapers, newspaper clippings for the local area as well as South Dakota in general, cemetery records, newsletters from many other genealogical societies, etc. This facility is staffed by volunteers to assist genealogists and other researchers. Please contact the library for hours and more information.

Volunteer members of the AAGS will assist with lookups of items in the Heritage Room as time permits.. Obituary files, consisting of newspaper cuttings of death notices, and burials from local (and in some cases, out of state) newspapers is particularly userful. The two volume Brown County South Dakota: Cemetery Internments [sic] thru 1994 published by Richard L Kight (Harker Heights, TX: Richard L. Kight, 1996) is another great resource for burial records. There is currently a project to update, expand, and correct these volumes. If sending in research requests, please consider joining the AAGS as a dues-paying member ($12/year last I checked) at a minimum. The AAGS can always use contributions.

The Tree Climber

The Tree Climber is the family history periodical published since 1974 by the Aberdeen Area Genealogical Society. [Does anyone have date of Vol. 1, Number 1?] I believe some back issues are available from the Aberdeen Area Genealogical Society.
