This is a general inquiry about the cemeteries in Brule Co. Are there
any cemeteries that have not been indexed? I am trying to locate the
graves of my great great grandfather, William and Barbara Ann Elisabeth
Richards. I know that his son and daughter-in-law, Louis and Richards;
their son William G. Richards and their daughter and son-in-law Abbie
and Lee Conant are buried in the Kimball cemetery; however, there is no
listing for William Richards sr. I also know that he filed his
homestead in Brule county on March 10 1887 (S1/2NW-4-102N-67W-5). Does
anyone have any suggestions where my ancestors may be buried? Any help
would be apreciated.

I found the name of an ancestor of me in Brule County. My ancestor JOHN SCHAFGES ( SCHAFGES, SHAFGES) came to America
in 1853. I wasn´t able to locate any person with this surname, except of two, who aren´t related to us.
I found a Matthias Shafges ( Schäfges), naturilazised in Brule County in 1903. Last week I ordered the Naturalization Record in
Chamberlain and was very happy to receive it this morning. I hoped to find the name of his father on this record. ( I hope it is John
Schafges, my ancestor). But in vain. There wasn´t any entry, which might help me finding, where he came from. I also couldn´t find any
Schafges or Shafges in the white Pages. So, please:
IS THERE ANYBODY IN BRULE COUNTY, WHO KNOWS SOMETHING ABOUT MATTHIAS
SCHAFGES ( SHAFGES), WHO WAS NATURALIZED IN 1903 in Brule County? Or any
other SCHAFGES or SHAFGES in South Dakota or anywhere else??? Every little
hint would be appreciated! Thanks a lot beforehand!
Thanks a lot, Sabine Niemeyer from Germany

I envision the internet yielding information about the Olson family in the 1864-70 time frame in the Elk Point Dakota
territory might find the leads in the Paul Lutheran Church... records of confirmation etc. It was a log church...Norwegian
Evangelical Lutheran congregation( the first in Dakota Territory in 1868. Location as I recall, would be at the junction of
highways 50& 11 ...about 1/4 miles Reverend Nesse(a) confirmed my grandmother Dorthea Olson.
Does this help put a fix on the search? Thank you CJ

I'm doing research on my great grandfather, Wilhelm Utesch, who was sent to Kimbal
South Dakota during 1889 as a missionary for the Lutheran Church. I am looking for information
on what Kimbal was like during 1889. The only note I have is that during the late summer and
fall of 1889 there was a severe drought. My grandfather mentions "the Lutheran settlers were
soon driven away by sandstorms, grasshoppers and the Indians and consequently sought
new homes in the states of Washington and Oregon." Would love to fill information about the
area during that year if anyone has sources to refer to me. Thanks! Dianne Walsh

Glenn William RUNGE was born 12/24/1952 in Kimball, Brule County, SD. He was
born to Anna and Frederick RUNGE, and was a sibling to Alyce (Runge)
Kunzweiler, Josephine (Runge) Pulse, Esther (Runge) Carlson, Pearl (Runge)
McCartor, Joyce (Runge) Briggs, Floyd Runge, and Gloria (Runge) Foreman.
Glenny left Kimball and began his military service with the Army in October 1951.
He went with the 7th Division, 31st Regiment, Medical Bn to Korea.
His last rank was Corporal and last position was as a medical aidsmen on the line.
He was killed in action on 10/14/1952 during one of the bloodiest
battles of that War - Operation Showdown on Hill 598 (Iron Triangle, Jane
Russell Hill) - while trying to save the life of a fellow soldier. We have
been researching Glenny, Korea, and the battle that claimed his life in hopes
of documenting his story and keeping his memory alive in our family.
If you knew Glenny, served with Glenny, have any information about him or Op
Showdown, please email me. If any of your family & friends served with the
7/31 in 1951/1952 Korea, and were fortunate enough to return, I would
appreciate your help in asking them that same question and favor. Photos of

I'm looking for info. on Lester Everett MOCK b. Feb. 18, 1898 in Kimball, SD.
Parents John Oliver Mock and Mary Molly Mottle. He married Ruth Marguerite (Maggie) Duncan
in SD maybe. They had my father, Boyd Everett Mock in Lemmons Perkins April of 1919.
My dad had two sisters, Doris (Duffy) and Mary Jo. I'm not positve if they were both Lester's and
Maggie's. Lester's siblings were; Cora E., Elsworth A., Robert and Joseph. At some point he and
some of his siblings moved to Oregon. I'm fairly certain his Grandfather William John Mock died
near Forbes ND 1918. Lester died in Eugene OR. 1977.
Also, I found Lester, Maggie, Boyd and Maggie's dad Samuel L Duncan on the Corson county
census in 1920. I do not know my grdma Maggie mother's name but I know they were all
(including my Mock's) from Illinois. I don't believe Maggie's mother made it to SD but Samuel did.
Can you tell me whether he died in SD? I know Maggie died in WA. 1977.
Last note, what was the Canistoda? I found where some Duncan's and Mock's helped form the
first Am. Legion and some thing about the Canistota in Brown County. I'm not sure of the spelling.
Thank you for your time,

William Hugh SOBEY b. 1840-1841
A transcript of court proceedings for the
probate of his father, Thomas Sobey's estate
states that on July 24, 1890 William (age 49) was
living in Brule County, Dakotas at that time
He is also listed in the to Brule Co., SD -
Index to Early Homesteaders though the listing
does not offer a date and I sure love to know when
he started homesteading: (Sobey Wm.
27 Pleasant Grove 101 N 68 W)
He is also found in the 1890 South Dakota
Veterans Schedule Index online which does not give
ages, or dates:
SOBEY, WILLIAM
Brule, County, SD
p. 002 Ed. 97
ID # SD1968648
I cannot get hold of the microfilm for the
Dakotas in the library I visit (it has regional to
Texas microfilm only) to check on the 1890 regular
census.
His spouse's name was Christina BURKE. Her
mother was a CAMPBELL. By 1890, his first two
children should have been born and I'm hoping the
census listing will provide Effie's age. John was
born in 1888. Will may have been born by then,
too. He was the youngest.
If anyone has any information about William
Hugh SOBEY or access to the 1890 Census, I'd
appreciate knowing more about him. He was my
great-grandfather.

I have a little story about Lorenzo Jones DAVIS, b:July 14, 1866.
Here is a letter he wrote home in 1898:
Letter from L.J.Davis to his mother in Green City,MO.
"Running Water, S.D. 9/15/98
Dear Mother
Your kind and welcome letter received and I must admit my negligence
in writing and will promis to try and so better hereafter.
Tell Hattie (Pete) and Ella to both be sure and write and I will
answer forthwith - write me all the news from away back.
Mr. Sauford (? Sawford) whom I have been keeping books for has had me
in charge of a couple of steamboats he has for the last 2 months and has
kept me pretty busy is one reason I have not written. I tried to get out
of it but he said I was the only one he could trust (which made me feel
somewhat important) so I went at it as he has always been very good to me.
We run from this point up about 150 miles hauling lumber and mdse up
and wheat and livestock down here where it is shipt by rail Sioux City and
Chicago.
I have charge of everything in the business part of the biz. and have
got a long very will so far. We will probably be able to run until about the
1st of Nov.
I feel a little shaky sometimes as I am compelled to carry considerable
money at times and this is considered a pretty tough country especially along
the river and among the calss of men who work around steamboats.
It is mostly a new country just opened up and lots of cattle rustlers
and half breeds along the line who would not hesitate at anything if they
knew a man had money.
I have not heard from Elton for a long time but I expect it is my fault
as I believe it is my turn to write. I hope I can see my way clear to pay
you all a visit this winter.
But will not promise for certain for I have promised so often especially
to Mollie (Mollie Bruner) that I guess she thinks I can't tell the truth.
Give my love to Pa, Arthie, Hattie, Ellan and accept a portion to yourself.
Your Prodigal L.J.Davis"
He never showed up to see his mother or anyone else for that matter. He was a
good letter writer, but was never heard from again. If anyone has ANY information PLEASE share!

that he lived in Hutchinson County, SD in 1880 according to the Census and his
wife at the time was Carrie, about 30 years younger than he. His first wife
was Anna TOPPING they came from Albany, NY. Their son, Theodore MUSSELMAN was
in Hutchinson County at the same time and was 21 years old. I've confirmed
this relationship via Theodore's death record in Sioux City, IA. I have also
found a George F. Musselman listed in the Mitchell, SD G.A.R. registry on this
Web Page. In addition, a G.F. MUSSELMAN is buried in Riverview Cemetery,
Brule Co., SD. No death record for him in Brule Co. It would have been about
1885-1890.
I am looking for any other clues to his existence in SD as well as his other
family members besides Theodore.

I am looking for information on the Lund
family of Chamberlain, Brule County, SD.
Vincent Carl LUND graduated High School in Chamberlain SD
in 1938 and looking for any information about family in Brule Co., SD.
Vincent Carl Lund father was Niels Lund born 1883 Centerville, SD mother
was Helen Theresa Foran
brothers and sisters to Vincent Carl Lund were
Camella Lund
Christian Lund
June Lund
Bernard LeRoy Lund
Tony Lund was born 1893 and died October 1976 in Chamberlain Brule CO., SD.
I finally received a copy of the death certificate for Neils
Lund. On it is listed his father, Peter Lund(could he have been Christian
Peter Lund?) and his mother Marie Nelson(instead of Ada Christianson). I am
beginning to believe we are looking for two different generations of Lunds.
The first would be Christian and Ada, the second would be Peter and Marie,
and the third would be Neils and Helen. Ages we have for Christian and Ada
would more line up in this framework. Christian-b 1820, d 1923, he would
have been 103 years old when he died; and Ada-b 1842, d 1938.

Researching families that settled in Brule County around 1884.
Henry CLAYTON came from Iowa County, Wisconsin to the Kimball area
in 1883. He married a homesteaders daughter Olive DAVIDS in 1884 at
Waldro. Olive was the daughter of Robert & Minerva (MORGAN) DAVIDS.
The DAVIDS family came around the same time from Minnesota. Henry
and Olive had three children; Clarence, Jessie Hellin and Raymond
before leaving for Iowa in 1890.
Another CLAYTON family also lived in the area in Lyon. Lawson CLAYTON
with his wife Isabella and 4 known children; David, Ida, Edith and
Caroline. The family was living in Lyon as early as 1885 and the
last record I have is from 1911. Was this family related to my
Great Grandfather Henry Clayton? Any information on these families
will be greatly appreciated.

We have recently received a request for information on a person that
lived in Kimball in the 1880s. Following is the information that is
currently available:
Antonin and Mary HAVLIK went to Kimball where Antonin died sometime in
1885 and Mary and children homesteaded near Kimball until 1892. Frank
Havlik (presumably one of the children) was baptised at St. Margaret's
Church in May 1885. The record of the baptism is there but not the
record of the death of Antonin. The secretary at St. Margaret's said the
book containing the deaths during that time is missing.
The priest that baptised Frank Havlik was named Father J. B. McGowan,
Bohemian Church. Perhaps his records (if they can be located) would
contain information on the death of Antonin.
Any information on Antonins death record or burial record will be appreciated.

I am searching for the relatives or friends of the family who raised a
Paul Edward MARTIN born 5/28/16 who was my father. Records show that his
parents were said to be of German descent and he may have been raised in
the German Lutheran faith. He was supposed to have been born in Sioux
Falls, SD but we have been unable to find a birth certificate. His
parents died when he was small and he was brought to the White Lake, SD
area at the age of two where he lived until the age of about 14. Any
assistance in finding someone who might have known him, gone to school
with him, or knew of the family that raised him would be greatly appreciated.
