EMSLEY CATHOLIC CEMETERY, DAVISON CO SD
Tobin Twp., Davison County SD
NE 1/4 NE 1/4 Sec.28, Twp.101, R61W
The Emsley Community is located 5 miles west of Mitchell and
12 miles south near the Douglas County border. The Assumption
Catholic Church stands on the corner of Section 38 with the
cemetery to the south in a neat fenced in area. A large metal
gate graces the entrance, and a short distance beyond the gate
stands a large memorial cross, placed here by the Oster family.
The land was donated to the Church by Joseph Schoenfelder in
1898. The first death is listed for the infant of Philip and
Mary Tobin, also in 1898. The church was served by ministers
from the Ethan parish until about 1970 when the doors were closed.
The first church building was destroyed by fire in about
1930. William Schoenfelder, followed by Peter Schoenfelder,
(Grandson of Joseph) have served as cemetery caretakers, and
recently (1978) a cemetery association was formed to provide
future upkeep. No map or plot record was found, other than the
WPA Cemetery listing. From this listing and our own stone records
and measurements we drew a map. Early death records were obtained
from the Ethan Catholic Church and from County records.
Stones were read in June of 1978 by the Davison County
Genealogical Society.
Records verified by Peter Schoenfelder and Tony Oster.
An asterisk in front of a death date indicates that there is no stone.
