John T. Hare Passes Away

Was a Pioneer and had resided in Lake County for the past 48 years

One by one the pioneers are passing away and this week we are called upon to chronicle the death of John T. Hare who passed away early Monday morning at the house of his daughter Mrs. Otto Kaske, with whom he had made his home since the death of his wife about three years ago.

John T. Hare was born at Plattsburg County, New York, April 7, 1830 being 87 years, 3 months and two days old at time of death. Death was due chiefly to his advanced age.

In 186? Mr. Hare was married at Plattsburg to Miss Matilda Kidd, and moved shortly afterwards to the state of Minnesota where they remained three years. In October 1870 they moved to Lake County coming overland by team. He located on the north shore of the beautiful Lake Madison where he and his wife continually resided until three years ago when the latter was called to her final rest. Since then Mr. Hare has made his home with his daughter the larger part of the time.

At the time of his death Mr. Hare was probably the oldest settler remaining in Lake county and thus we witness the passing of a truly pioneer, one who has experienced all hardships of frontier life in this section and who remained to see his efforts bear fruit. Arriving in Lake county in the early territorial days, possessed but of a few earthly goods, but carrying with them a cheerful heart and a strong will, he set forth to establish a home and rear his family. He took an important part in the early development of Lake county and was a member of the first board of county commissioners.

The deceased is survived by seven children, namely: Mrs. John Huntimer, of Washington, Mrs. Nell Cooper of Canada, Lewis of Spokane, Washington, Ira, Frank, Mrs. Otto Kaske and Mrs. Gus Kaske, all of Wentworth.

Funeral services were conducted (Thursday) afternoon at the home of Otto Kaske, by Rev. W.H.Cassell, and interment was made in the Rose Hill cemetery.
(Enterprise Newspaper, Wentworth, South Dakota. NOTE: John T. Hare died July 9, 1917. This obit probably ran in the paper within approximately 24 hours.)
