MARY LEITERMAN

Funeral Services At St. Thomas Church at 9:30 O’Clock This Morning

The funeral of the late Miss Mary Leiterman was held at St. Thomas church at 9:30 o’clock this morning, Rt. Rev. Mgr. T. A. Flynn celebrating high mass.

The pallbearers were Wm. Hunter, J. J. Fitzgerald, John Rei, Peter Edinger, Herman Woestman, Matt O’Connell.

Mary Leiterman was born in Chicago in 1854. The family removed to eastern Iowa where they resided until 1893 when with her two brothers and a sister deceased came to Lake county, locating in Orland township.

With confidence in the future of the new country, they invested freely in farm lands in their locality which they have retained all these years and which has grown in value, providing them with a liberal competency. A few years ago, with her brothers, Frank and Geo. J. Leiterman, deceased removed to Madison, locating on the east limits of the city where they built a fine commodious home, and settled down to the enjoyment of life.

Death entered the home in 1902 and Geo. J. Leiterman was taken in his young manhood. Deceased and her brother, Frank, continued to reside in the home until about two years ago when they purchased a residence in East Fifth street, convenient to church and business facilities, and on account of the failing health of the sister they have lived quietly and retired, deceased remaining at home except in the performance of her church duties in which she was very devout.

Among those who knew them best, deceased and her brothers and sister, Mrs. M. Cosgrove, are highly respected for their sterling character and Christian charities. Deceased had been more or less and invalid from early womanhood and during the past year she has been a pitiful but patient sufferer from cancerous affections of the lungs, her suffering at times being intense, which, however, she bore with Christian fortitude and hope of her reward beyond.

The remains were followed from the church to the Catholic Cemetery by a long line of sympathizing friends and all that was mortal of the Christian lady was laid beside her brother, who had gone before.

The immediate family relatives surviving are brother, Frank Leiterman, with whom deceased had made her lifetime home. Mrs. M. Cosgrove of this city and Sister M. Wilhelmine, sister superior of St. Michael’s orphanage of LaCrosse, Wis., sisters, all of whom have the full measure of sympathy of many friends in their bereavement.

An omission was made in the obituary of Miss Mary Leiterman which appeared in yesterday’s Daily Leader

The name Mrs. Theressa Drexler of Dyersville, Ia., a sister,  should have been included in the list of surviving family relatives. Mrs. Drexler was at the bedside of her sister, ministering to her comfort for several weeks prior to her death.

Mr. John Drexler, husband of this sister, and their two sons, William and Andrew are in the city and were present at the funeral.
