Bob Hall
(bobhall@pcisys.net) Mon Jan 10 20:07:33 2000 My Great uncle Thomas
P. HALL was in Lead City as a miner during the mid 1890's. He left Lead for the
Sturgis area in 1895. I'm trying to determine where he might have been
naturalized. He came to the U.S. in 1887, going first to the Upper Peninsula of
Michigan and then on to Lead City South Dakota. Is it reasonable to assume that
he might have completed his naturalization process in South Dakota?

(mariahnp@teleport.com) Mon Jul 3 13:39:59 2000 Looking for
Edmund WHITMORE. In 1860, Edmund lived with his father and mother in
Ira, Vermont.
1860 CENSUS, Ira, Rutland, VT: WHITMORE, Merritt; Maria, wife; EDMUND,
8, son; Charlotte, 5, dau; Meritt, 3, son; Sylvanus, 19, nephew;
Chloe, 73, widow, (mother)
In 1879, at the age of 27, Ed left Vermont and moved west. I found the
following in my father’s memory notes: "Sylvanus WHITMORE, wife, and two
daughters, along with a cousin, Ed WHITMORE and his family, homesteaded
together (in) Knox County, Nebraska. Ed’s wife was named Clara. Ed had
several children—one daughter named Ella who married a WETMORE, and a
boy, Merritt WHITMORE, who was crippled when he ran out of a doorway with
no outside steps…."
According to Knox county land records, Edmund WHITMORE proved up on his
Nebraska claim and sold it to my great grandfather, Sylvanus L. WHITMORE, on
Oct. 6, 1884—at which time Ed and his family lived in Lawrence
County, Territory of Dakota (now in South Dakota). In 1889,
one Edmund E. WHITMORE bought 160 acres of Federal land in
Meade County, SD, and one Edmond E. WHITMORE purchased forty
acres of Federal land in Meade County in 1902. Did Ed move to
the adjacent county after 1884? If he lived an average
lifetime, he probably died between 1912 and 1932. I would like
to hear from Cousin Ed’s descendants. M. Matthews, Oregon |

Bob Swenson
(rswenson@stanford.edu) Wed Aug 16 15:23:18 2000 We are
looking for family of Anna Rose LAPIN (?LAPPIN) b. Webster, Day County
11/5/1883 of unknown parents. Anna married Wallace FARRAGUT and they had
at least two children, Virginia b. 1914 Illinois, and Wilma C. (Mina) b.
1917 Mississippi. Mina Farragut became a movie actress and dedicated a
WWII destroyer named after other side of family (USS FARRAGUT, DD-3348)
Surviving crew and officers want to know more about family. There were
few LAPPINs in early SD but there was a Patrick LAPPIN & wife Mary HAYES
of Lawrence County. Of considerable interest is that Wallace FARRAGUT
worked for a Arizona silver mine company in 1920 - perhaps relevant to SD
mining? Any input greatly appreciated.
Sincerely Bob Swenson for the USS FARRAGUT crew

Sandra Romans
(sromans@nvc.net) Mon Oct 9 18:16:15 2000 We are looking for the
WIFE OF Squire Peter ROMANS. The Deadwood newspaper - June
22,1886 tells of him going to 'the end of the line' to pick up
his wife - they return and are residing in the Miller building
on Lee Street at the corner of William. We know he later
married a lady named Cora from CT - so did this wife die there
in Deadwood? We didn't know there was a first wife until
finding the newspaper online - don't know her name - just that
the newspaper tells of him meeting her and bringing her to
Deadwood. Could someone look in the death records of
1886-1900? I wonder if she died in childbirth??? |

Jesse H. JAMES, Sr.
(j1882j@qwest.net) Mon Dec 11 23:30:43 2000 My wife and I are
trying to find adoption/birth records for April of 1956. I was
born in Deadwood/Lead, South Dakota at St. Joseph's Hospital.
From my understanding Frank M. JAMES, MD, I'm told is my
biological father and also the Doctor who delivered me. My
birth mother was at the time a nurse at the hospital and my
father practiced medicine out of the Hospital. On the day in
question he called his wife, Juanita W. JAMES, and she adopted
me within hours of my birth. The birth certificate that I have
says nothing about being adopted and shows both parents as my
biological parents. I am trying to locate the original
adoption/birth records from the night I was born. I am
confused because on the birth certificate I have, there is a 6
month 9 day lapse in time from my birth to the filing of the
birth certificate. I'm also told that my biological mother
still lives in the area. I'm simply attempting to locate her.
I have no name and according to the word I get she would be in
the neighborhood of her early 50s to middle 60s, even 70. She
was an employee of St. Joseph's Hospital where my father,
Frank JAMES, practiced. He played around on his wife and it
seems this young lady was the target of his affection.
Thanking you in advance, Jesse H. James, Sr.

Zimmerman (erikazimmerman@netscape.net) Sun Dec 31 08:31:43
2000 I am looking for anyone in the Spearfish, Lawrence
County, South Dakota area who know of or might be related to the COLE
family. My mother, JUANITA COLE, was raised in Spearfish along with her
two sisters, BETTE and VERNITA, and her brother EUGENE. Her father was
ROY VALENTINE COLE (DOB 2-14-1910) and her mother FERN LUCELIE (BUNDSHUH)
COLE (DOB 11-16-1919). I think one or more of ROY'S brothers settled in
either the Butte or Lawrence County areas. ROY'S brothers were ALVIN
JULIUS (DOB 7-4-1912 Midland, S.D.) and ROBERT WARREN (DOB7-10-1917). I
am told that my grandfather, ROY, has several uncles who lived in
Spearfish at one time - PETER COLE (Beresford, S.D.), CORNELIUS COLE (DOB
9-1882), and possibly TUNIS C. COLE, GRACE COLE, JENNIE COLE, and MABLE
COLE.
I know that my gf-ROY, his father TUNIS, and several of the uncles worked
in construction, and I think they had something to do with building a
very large dam in the area.
If any of this sounds familiar I would love to hear from you! Email me at
