Cleland, Ray                    Camp Funston, Kans.   July 20 1918

Dear Mom,

I will answer your letter which I received about a week ago.

We went out on the rifle range and I didn't have time to write. We went out Monday and came back Saturday. There was about 18,000 soldiers there. We sure had some time. We had two sleep in a tent and on the ground. Our stove was a hole dug in the ground.

Well, I guess I can get as many Huns  as the rest of them. I made the best score of all of them in our company. I was talking to the captain today and he said I'd be put with the sharpshooters. Now I'm with the regular men. They are all old men. There are only about three or four new men in our company.

How is everything around the city of Oacoma? How are Earl and Bessie? If you see them tell them not to get excited if they don't hear from me. I'm just too busy. I had a letter from Charlotte Dittman the other day. She said Leon had to go to the army.

I have to close for this time as it is time to go to bed. Have the girls write two or three times a week. Tell Kate I will write first chance I get.

Hope this finds you all well. Your son,
Ray Cleland
