  Lyman Soldier Now a Member of Crew on Ship   1945

    Aboard the USS New York in the Pacific - Edward A. Porterfield, Seaman 2nd Class, USNR, son of Mr. and Mrs. S.A. Porterfield of Lyman, has boarded the New York to become a member of her crew.
    A graduate of Reliance High School, Porterfield joined the navy in October, 1944, took boot training at Farragut, Idaho, and was stationed in the Hawaiian Islands for several months before leaving to join this ship.
    The New York took part in the Iwo Jima and Okinawa invasion bombardments. She is also a veteran of the North African invasion. Commissioned in April 1915, she saw duty in WWI and witnessed the surrender of the German Fleet in the year 1918.
