Julius A. Salzmann
March 5, 1920 – July 25, 1944
Iona, Lyman County, South Dakota
Killed in Action on Saipan-Marianas Islands

Julius was born March 5, 1920, at Iona, South Dakota, which is in southern Lyman County. Julius was the fifth
of seven children born to Arthur C. and Kathern M. Salzmann. In order of age, the Salzmann children were Lois, Mildred, Richard, Helen, Julius, Conrad, and Emanuel.

Julius’ brother, Richard, recalls that Julius grew up in a happy family; they were involved in farming and ranching, where livestock and grain were produced. Julius, and his brothers and sisters, rode horses, milked cows, worked in the gardens, in addition to all the other farm work.

Julius attended grade school and some of high school at Iona; after that he went to State College at Brookings
where he received a high school diploma by taking a short-course program for two years. While at Brookings, he
also joined the ROTC. As his brother says, “He (Julius) was a good student, a hard worker, and enjoyed the farm life.”

On January 7, 1942, Julius enlisted in the Marine Corps at Minneapolis, Minnesota. Pfc. Salzmann trained until October of 1942 in California and then went overseas.

Pfc. Julius Alexander Salzmann was sent to the Pacific theater of operations; first stationed in New Zealand and then the South Pacific combat area. He was killed in action on Saipan-Marianas Islands on July 25, 1944.

We thank Julius Salzmann for his sacrifice and his service.
