The  Spring  Valley  Baptist  Church

This small church was affiliated with the Emory German Baptist Church from 1884 to 1906 when they organized their own church.  In 1914 they bought the Baptist church building in Bridgewater.  The mover was to move the building to near Canistota but gave up before arriving there, it took a second mover to get it situated.  The above early photo of the church is compliments of Donna Johnson and her son, Scott.

The services were not allowed to be in German during World War I but German was used by the community members for many years.  In early years the church shared a pastor with the Baptist church in Unityville, but starting in 1945 had their own who was at times, a student minister or other temporary person.  Finally in 1971 it was decided to close the church.  During its existence the church helped create 87 years of fond memories and relationships within the community.

The Spring Valley Baptist Cemetery had been used for years as a branch of the church but a formal cemetery association was formed in 1971 to ensure its continued operation and service to the community.
