Carrieres Family

Harmisdass Carrieres came to Rapid City in about 1881 with wife, Celina (Volin), whose brothers had migrated earlier from Canada and set up a freight business with a outlet, supposedly on Sixth and Main Streets. Harmisdass and partner formed the South Rapid Land Company. As Harmisdass had studied in a seminary before his marriage and was a devout Catholic, family rumor held that he named the streets in South Rapid - St. Patrick, St. Andrew, ect.

Three children were born to this union: Joseph A. (Bert), Mary who died at age 16, and Theresa, who trained as a nurse. When his folks moved to Silver City, where Harmisdass was postmaster, Bert at age 14 carried the mail to Rapid City on horseback and returned the next day . He killed his first deer on one of those treks. Bert homesteaded at Camp Crook and later worked on the Crouch Rail Line where he met and married Kathleen Boyd, a school teacher. Kathleen was born in 1888 in the jail in Rapid City. Her father was deputy sheriff and her uncle, the sheriff.

The family moved from Silver City to Rapid City in 1925. Their six children attended Cathedral High School. Bert worked as a carpenter during this time. He died February 26, 1960; Kathleen died June 24 1969 in Spokane. Rita worked at the telephone company in Rapid City and California, married Louis Illes from Pennsylvania. Al joined the CCC in 1941, moved to San Diego, married and had two children after spending two years in the Army. He retired from General Dynamics. Theresa married Lloyd Virtue from Rapid City. They had four children two died as infants. Theresa died September 26, 1982 in Spokane. Joseph E. joined the military in January 1941 and retired from the Air Force in 1967. He married Mary Jane Colgan, high school classmate and daughter of Tom and Lillie Colgan from Spring Creek in Pennington County. Joe and Mary have nine children. They lived one year 1961-62 in Rapid City while Joe served a isolated tour in Thule, Greenland. Kathleen Carrieres married Larry Ingvalson from Arlington, South Dakota, he graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines and was later the manager of Anaconda Copper, Great Falls, Montana. The had six children, three girls and three boys, Larry died in 1965. John Carrieres served in the Korean War. married Margaret Porterfield ( Spokane, Washington)

They have four children, three girls and one boy.

No one in the family carried on the name Harmisdass.
