The Dakota House was built in 1886 by Jim Springsteel who operated it for a very short time. He then sold the property to A.D. McMaster who remained proprieter until 1906. It became known as the McMaster Hotel under his management. Mr. McMaster sold out to Clark E. Bates and again the hotel took on the old, familiar name of Dakota House. At this time a three story tile annex with brick front was added. On the night of December 1, 1908, with the thermometer at 15 degrees below zero, the hotel burned to the ground. The hotel stood where the Anderson Lumber Yards are now located. (From: Gettysburg South Dakota, 75th Anniversary, 1883-1958, page 120) |
