DIED

(Herald--September 12, 1895)

Miss Mary A. Sanderson, whose death occurred at her home near Copp, S.D., Sept. 4, 1895, was born in Vinton County Ohio, March 11, 1847.  Since 1883, she has been a resident of South Dakota.  She was a, woman possessing no small intellectual and mora1 worth, and was held in high esteem by all who knew her for these qualities.  Seventeen or eighteen years of her life were spent in teaching school, a vocation which she had followed from girlhood in the east until failing health led her to this state in hope of regaining her lost vigor.  She was not wholly disappointed in this, and so far recovered as to be able to resume her favorite occupation for a time after arriving here.  She also took up land and has conducted the business of farming in conjunction with that of teaching.  Her health, however, has been gradually failing for a number of years, until the crisis came on Wednesday of last week.  She became a member of the Presbyterian church in 1870 and has lived a consistent Christian life ever since.  In this calling she seems to have developed most prominently the virtue of patience, although her vocation was such  as to put upon it a peculiar strain.

At the last she gave her friends the assurance that she was both reconciled to the Divine will and prepared for the change which awaited her.  As she neared the great river which divides this world from the next, she called in her friend to her bedside and assured them that the Lord was her shepherd, giving evidence that her faith at the critical moment was unfaltering.  Funeral services were conducted at the home of her brother, J. H. Sanderson, by Rev. S. E. Fish on Thursday of last week and temporary interment made at Lebanon cemetery. Later the remains will be taken to Indiana for permanent burial.
