Rosholt Area Churches |
The following information was kindly submitted by Ms. Ellen Sherlock
Saint Joseph's Lutheran Church is Swedish Lutheran
congregation. Located 2 miles East and 2 miles South of
Rosholt. The parsonage, Church and cemetery are all on the
grounds together.
Trondhjem Lutheran Church is a Norwegian Lutheran
congregation. Located 6 miles South and about 1 mile West of
Rosholt. The Church is closed but the cemetery is on the
grounds there. The cemetery is well maintained.
Membership transferred to Rosholt to Bethania Lutheran Church as
the two churches shared a pastor and membership was down.
Brandvold Lutheran Church was a Norwegian Lutheran
congregation. Located 2 miles North of Victor which is located
about 5 miles West of Rosholt. The Church is closed but the
cemetery is on the grounds there and is being
maintained. The Church building has been
demolished. The membership transferred to Bethania Lutheran
Church in Rosholt. Brandvold, Trondhjem and Bethania always
shared a pastor. The parsonage is in Rosholt, across the
street from the Bethania Church building.
Bethania Lutheran Church is a Norwegian Lutheran
congregation. This is the main Lutheran Church for the
Norwegians in the area. The cemetery is a short distance
(about 1/2 mile) East of Rosholt.
Saint Peter's Lutheran Church is the German Lutheran
congregation. This Church was a rural church and closed in about
1955. The cemetery is still on the grounds and is being
maintained. Deceased persons are still being laid to rest
in this cemetery after their services being held at one of the
other Lutheran Churches or at the funeral home in town. To
find the cemetery, go 3 miles South and 1/2 mile West from
Rosholt. The last 1/2 mile is a gravel township road and it
has been flooded in recent years. There is no access from
the West to this cemetery because no one lives on that road and
it is not being repaired from the flooding.
Church of the Nazarene was located in Rosholt. The
Church is closed. The congregation was always very small.
Deceased members from this Church were buried in Hillside
Cemetery West of Rosholt.
United Methodist Church was/is located in Rosholt.
Membership had dropped to under 10 and so the building was closed
in 2000. The building remains standing in town but there
are no services held there. Deceased members from this
congregation were buried in Hillside Cemetery 1/2 mile West of
Rosholt.
Assembly of God Church is located in Rosholt. This
is a small membership but the Church is still open.
Deceased members are buried in Hillside Cemetery 1/2 mile West of
Rosholt.
Hillside Cemetery is used by several of the local
churches. Many of the Churches have closed but there are
many loyal family members that volunteer their time to make sure
that this cemetery is well maintained.
Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church is in the Southwest
part of town. The cemetery is located North of
Rosholt. I am not sure of the exact location but if you ask
anyone in town, you can get accurate directions. The
cemetery is named Saint Nicholas Cemetery; if you ask for the
"Catholic Cemetery" there is only that one near
Rosholt.
If you are unsure of where your ancestors are buried in
the area, you would need to know the location they lived
near. It will help in researching and for the researcher to
pin down a location of the cemetery. The names of the towns
would be: White Rock, Crawford, Vernon, Diamond and Victor.
Rosholt was not in existence until 1913 after the railroad was
built. White Rock was the center of commerce and all
"trading" until that time. Rosholt became the
center because of the railroad. White Rock gradually lost
all of the businesses, most of which relocated to Rosholt.
White Rock is a "ghost town" with a population of 10
persons. Victor was depleted in business and population
also. There are about 10 persons living in the town of
Victor and they do have a few businesses. Crawford, Vernon
and Diamond were more or less "wiped off the map" as
Rosholt grew. These little towns were within about 20 miles
of each other so as transportation improved the distance became
less of a problem and people could easily travel for selling
crops and buying needed goods.
