Swan Lake hosted the first settlers in Turner County in 1869, and while other areas grew up quickly the area close to Swan Lake
was full of growth and spawned ideas for years.  Two schools were known as Swan Lake schools and numerous religious groups
were formed in the area.  By 1874 there was an active group of Seventh Day Adventists in the area and in 1876 a Norwegian
Lutheran church was being built.  There was an active Baptist group by 1872, an Episcopal mission was attempted in 1878 and a Presbyterian church organized in 1879.  None of these lasted for very long, partly because the railroad came to Hurley and this
caused the eventual demise of Swan Lake as a community.

Catholic services were being held in area homes as early as 1873 and the Swan Lake Catholic Church was built in 1874, the
church cemetery was established at the same location.  The land was donated by Constant Rooth usually spelled as Ruth.  The
church building was replaced by a new building in Hurley that was dedicated in 1886.  The Swan Lake Catholic Cemetery quickly
became unused in favor of the Hurley city cemetery.   While it has been said that some graves were moved to Hurley there is no
written record to support this.  This cemetery was nursed back to its present well cared for state by Adeline and Rueben Morck
with some assistance from the Centerville Knights of Columbus.  A niece of Rueben, Mary Fredrickson and her husband Darrell,
are presently providing the excellent care.  A special thanks to Darrell for taking the photos used on this web site.

The Swan Lake Catholic Cemetery information database consists of 3 parts.

This information was prepared by Ken Tiahrt, with the generous assistance of friends of the cemetery and may be freely copied by individuals and non-profit organizations for their private use.  Any other use, including publication, storage in a retrieval system, or transmission by electronic, mechanical, or other means requires written approval.

1.  A Cemetery Map

An approximate map of the cemetery showing its relationship to the adjacent Turner County Roadways, 285 Street & 454 Avenue, gives the user a physical setting.   Very specific locations for a given burial plot can not be found using this information source.

2.  A List of Burials

A listing of the burials at St Joachim's Catholic Cemetery – Section 5 – Swan Lake Township – Turner County, gives the individual names.  This listing also gives the date of birth and date of death when available.  There are likely a few, but less than five other later burials that are not listed.
