       Bornn  Family  Cemetery

On June 20, 1895 Jacob Bornn and his wife Helena Bornn deeded a tract of land out of his homestead for a family burial plot.  It was 8 rods by 10 rods in the Northeast Quarter of the Northwest Quarter of Section 15, Township 99  Range 55.   Jacob arrived in South Dakota in 1874 coming from "Landskron, South Russia" in the Ukraine.

Jacob Bornn’s deed gave the tract to "my children and grandchildren."  Stated in the body of the deed  "Said ground to be used by myself, my children and grandchildren for a place of burial."

This Cemetery is not visible from the roadway and has not been used for burials for many years.  Except for the one remaining grave marker it is now grassland.  It is an example of what happened to nearly all family cemeteries, in the rural Midwestern United States.  The farm is now owned by Leslie Tieszen.

The local history book, A Tale of Three Cities, Marion, Monroe, Dolton,  states that there are about 15 to 17 bodies buried in this cemetery. There is a record of only those listed below.

2.  A List of Burials

A listing of the burials at Bornn Family Cemetery – Section 15 – Northwest Quarter – Rosefield Township – Turner County, gives the individual names.  This listing also gives the date of birth and date of death when available.

3.  Photos of Grave Monuments

There is only one grave marker on the Bornn Cemetery and that marker is shown on the right.

It is for Henry P and Anna Bornn Schroeder.   Anna's death year is incorrect on the marker, it is actually 1936.

There are no lot or plot numbers for this cemetery so it is uncertain where any graves other than the one with a marker are located.
