Bornn Family Cemetery
On June 20, 1895 Jacob Bornn and his wife Helena Bornn
deeded a tract of land out of his homestead for a family burial plot.
It was 8 rods by 10 rods in the Northeast Quarter of the Northwest
Quarter of Section 15, Township 99 Range 55. Jacob
arrived in South Dakota in 1874 coming from "Landskron, South Russia" in
the Ukraine.
Jacob Bornn’s deed gave the tract to
"my children and grandchildren." Stated in the body of the deed
"Said ground to be used by myself, my children and grandchildren for a
place of burial."
This
Cemetery is not visible from
the roadway and has not been used for burials for many years.
Except for the one remaining grave marker it is now grassland. It is
an example of what happened to nearly all family cemeteries, in the rural
Midwestern United States. The farm is now owned by Leslie Tieszen.
The local history book, A Tale
of Three Cities, Marion, Monroe, Dolton, states that there
are about 15 to 17 bodies buried in this cemetery. There is a record of
only those listed below.
