Emanual (Wellington) Lutheran Cemetery

Section 10 - Brothersfield Township - Turner County - South Dakota

A current aerial view of the cemetery

The original Emanual Missouri Lutheran Church was located on the east end of this property.   This church declined in membership and the cemetery was allowed to fall into serious neglect for many years in the mid 1900's.  The church members began attending the First English Lutheran Church in Parker, and ultimately sold the church building for use as a farm granary and moved the cemetery records to the Parker Church.  The cemetery has had limited care and is essentially unused.

The cemetery name was likely renamed by the WPA in about 1940 as Wellington Cemetery after the closest settlement that was roughly 3 miles north and 1/2 mile east.  This would have occured because the name Emanual Cemetery was not known to them.

A current photo of the now unused and relocated church

The photo of the church at the left illustrates how such church buildings retain their character while being used for agricultural purposes, a change that has occurred over and over in many rural areas with small populations.  The buildings were relatively well constructed to last for well over 50 years without any maintenance, some were used for granaries, some for equipment repair shops, some turned into housing.  The usefulness depended on the capabilities of the purchasing farmer.
