A Bit of History of the Grace Lutheran Church & Cemetery - Centerville, SD                

The Grace Lutheran Cemetery was established when the church was built in 1885 on land donated by Jacob Jenter.  There are numerous unmarked graves of small children as well as many other early pioneers who are interred in this cemetery.  A parsonage was later built on the site and the church was enlarged in 1901.  It continued to grow in numbers and the Hurley congregation was united with the same pastor in 1901.  This relationship has grown and ebbed over the years but at this time in 2011 one pastor still serves both congregations in Hurley and Centerville. 

The German language was not discontinued in services until 1946, and in 1962 the church disbanded and joined with the First English Lutheran group in Centerville.  This Centerville church was founded by Grace Church in 1934 and named "Our Savior's Lutheran Church".  The name was changed again in 1937 to "First English Lutheran Church"  when it joined the L.C.M.S.

When the Grace Lutheran Church closed, the building was donated to the Heritage Park at the Turner County Fairgrounds in Parker where it now stands as in the above photo.
