Hattervig  Cemetery  -  Viborg,  SD.

Section 25 - Swan Lake Township - Turner County - South Dakota

A very active Scandinavian community began forming in the late 1800's in the area of Viborg and Centerville South Dakota, including Hooker, Swan Lake and Spring Valley.  By 1890 several Lutheran churches had been formed, one in each community, and families from Norway and Denmark were arriving to take residency in this area.

The Hattervig Cemetery was established in 1879 on Hattervig land but was affiliated with the Nazareth Norwegian Lutheran Church in Centerville, sometimes known as the Elling Church.  Osmund Hattervig was one of the founding fathers of this Centerville church.

The Hattervig Cemetery was created so that local folks would have a place to bury family closer than Centerville.  It also served other Lutheran families in the Viborg area including the Bethlehem Lutheran church in Hooker, which was only 1 mile away from the cemetery.  This is a small cemetery which is still in the private ownership of a surviving Hattervig family member.

The Hattervig family was quite involved in community development and also started one of the first schools in Turner County when their children reached school age.  This school was later known as Swan Lake School District #42.

The Hattervig Cemetery information database consists of 3 parts.

This information was prepared by Ken Tiahr in 2010, with the generous assistance of Sherree Schmiedt who provided an unofficial copy of the burial records.  This information may be freely copied by individuals and non-profit organizations for their private use.  Any other use, including publication, storage in a retrieval system, or transmission by electronic, mechanical, or other means requires written approval.

1.  A Cemetery Map

An approximate map of the cemetery showing the individual lots in relationship to the nearby Turner County Roadway, 458 Avenue, gives the user a physical setting.   The cemetery is approximately 2 miles East of Viborg, 1.5  miles North, and within the field to the West.

2.  A List of Burials

A listing of the burials at Hattervig Cemetery – Section 25 – Swan Lake Township – Turner County, gives the individual names in alphabetic order.  This listing also gives the date of birth and date of death when available.  While specific grave sites are given, no official cemetery record book could be found.
