John W. Smith Funeral Rites Held at Burke

BURKE —
Funeral services for John W. Smith, 90, were Monday in the Union Baptist Church. The Rev. Joe Wallace officiated and burial was in Graceland Cemetery. Mr. Smith died Thursday here.

He was born July 11, 1877, in Texbridge, Ontario, Canada, and the family moved to a farm near Akron, Iowa, when he was three years old. He married Ethel Engle in 1901 in Akron, Iowa. They moved to Gregory county, S.D., in 1901 and lived in Lucas, S.D., area until 1961. Mr. Smith was one of the organizers of the Lucas Baptist Church which was built in 1908.

Survivors include the widow; a son, Theodore of Mason City, Iowa; two daughters, Mrs. H. B. (Edith) Scholes of Minneapolis and Mrs. Vera Steckman of Onamia, Minn.; 16 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild.
