Turner County is located in southeastern South Dakota bordering Minnehaha & McCook Counties to the north, Clay & Yankton Counties to the south, Lincoln to the east, and Hutchinson County. The county was formed in 1871 and named after John W. Turner (1800-1883). He was a member of the Michigan state house of representatives in 1851, A Democratic candidate for U.S. Representative from Michigan's 2nd District in 1862, and a member of the Dakota territorial council from 1865-67 & 1870-71. |
