Harry Allen Blake
1890-1974
Harry Allen Blake was born to Maitland Stickney and Ida Josephine (Beck) Blake on August 13, 1890 in Parker, SD. Between 1894 and 1898, the Blake family moved to Monroe, SD. By 1908, Harry was living in Ireton, Iowa as he sent a postcard to his older brother, Bill (William) and this postcard to his father. He was also baptized at the Presbyterian Church in Ireton on April 5, 1908. On the 1910 census for Ireton, Sioux County, Iowa, Harry was living with Roscoe Campbell and his family. Harry had a picture of him sitting in a buggy hitched to a horse in Ireton, IA dated 1916. On April 6, 1917, the US declared war on the Germans. Harry then completed his draft registration on June 5, 1917 and enlisted in the Army on July 9, 1917. On Dec. 14, 1917, the New Era reported that Harry and his brother Albert had arrived home for their mother's funeral. The New Era then reported on October 3, 1918, that "M.S. Blake received a card announcing the safe arrival of his son Harry in France." Harry returned from Europe on June 24, 1919, leaving St. Nazaire, France on the U.S.S. Mercury with his destination on the passenger list as Monroe, SD. Harry was living in Sioux Falls, SD when the 1920 census was taken with his occupation listed as a carpenter. Harry was never married. He moved West and lived near the Naval Base in Puget Sound where he worked as a carpenter for a private contractor. Harry enjoyed gardening and farmed in the area. On September 29, 1974, Harry Allen Blake passed away after a battle with cancer. He was buried at Laurel Hill Memorial Park, Cle Elum, Kittas County, WA. He visited his father and sister, Elsie in 1948. It is possible that Harry came to Deer River for the funeral of his oldest brother, Bill, who died in September, 1948. He is pictured above at that time with his great niece, Sue.
