Lars C. and Christine Jensen Family
Written by Alice Nelson Jensen
Lars Jensen was born December 1, 1851, in Sorbymagle, Sjaelland, Denmark. In 1876 he came to America with his parents. His name was actually Jens Larsen, but there were several with that name, so he changed his name to: Lars Jensen.
Christine Sorensen was born October 14, 1859 in Uriele Sogn, Jylland, Denmark. She came to America in 1871 with her parents, sisters and a brother. She had a sister, Lisa (John Miller’s mother) and a brother, Peter Platte, both who lived in Viborg.
Lars and Christine were married in 1879 and they had seventeen children. Five of the children died in infancy. The surviving children numbered twelve. There were eleven sons: Charley, Frank, Henry, Ed, Arthur, Lars Jr., William, Miner, Clarence, Bennie and Sam. There was one daughter, Emma. At the time of this writing in May 1990, Emma is the only survivor, and she will be 90 years old in September.
Lars Jensen kept a nearly complete record of financial and day by day events.
Before moving to Viborg, Lars and Christine lived on a farm one mile west and one and one-quarter north of Viborg.
Lars Jensen passed away September 8, 1919, and Christine died September 8, 1928. They are buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Viborg, South Dakota.
