George E. Lummis
1853-1932
George E. Lummis was born October, 18, 1853 in Uncasville, Connecticut to John and Rowena (Chapman) Lummis. He had one brother and one sister, neither of whom, it seemed, to have married. His father was a civil war veteran and became a prisoner during the war. It appeared that his father died in 1865 while still serving his country. Sometime between 1870 and 1880, George set out on his own and in 1880, ended up in Turner County, Dakota Territory. He was living with newlyweds, Maitland and Ida (Beck) Blake on the 1885 Dakota Territorial census. He took out a homestead and was granted a patent on January 26, 1887 on Range 99W, Township 53W, Section 19, E 1/2 of NW 1/4 of Section 19. His land was on the same section as John C. Overton, William J. Blake, Wayland Blake and Maitland Blake. George lived in Turner County until after the 1900 census when he married Maud R. Rhoad on April 21, 1903 in Orange City, Sioux County, IA. They moved back to Connecticut sometime shortly after their marriage as their oldest child, John A. Lummis was born on June 11, 1905 in Southington, Hartford, CT. He and Maud appeared on the 1910 and 1920 censuses with their sons, John A. Lummis (4 years) and George M. Lummis (2 years) in Southington, Hartford, Connecticut. George was listed as a farmer who owned his farm. No doubt he was able to purchase a farm in Connecticut after selling his homestead in South Dakota. However, in 1930, the family had moved to Chaplin, Windham, Connecticut, where George now owned a dairy farm. In addition, his sons John and George were driving a farm truck. George passed away on March 18, 1932 and was laid to rest in the South Chaplin Cemetery in Chaplin, Windham County, Connecticut.
