E. W. Allen was born in Washington County, Ill., Dec. 9, 1861, and passed away April 15, 1934, at the age of 72 years, 4 months and 15 days. He grew to manhood in Illinois and was married to Isabell Shelton, Feb. 8, 1892. To this union were born eleven children, three of whom preceded their father in death. Two children died in infancy and one daughter, Mrs. Syliva Smith, passed away five years ago. In 1920 the family moved to this vicinity and since that time he made his home on various farms in this community. When a young man he was converted and joined the Methodist Church but later he had his letter transferred to the Baptist church. Of late he had attended the Methodist church in Hudson.

He is survived by his wife and eight children: Mrs. Josie Highsmith and Ben and Fred Allen of Hawarden; Mrs. Claude Merritt of Sioux City; Sharpe Allen of Big Springs; Mrs. Chester Vipond of Hudson; Mrs. Peter Bloemendaal of Sheldon and Mrs. Leonard Hampton of Adrian, Minn. He also leaves three brothers and two sisters, Sherman Allen, and Mrs. Rose Cox of Mount Vernon, Ill.; H. D. Allen of Horton, Kan.; Chas. Allen of Meridian, Miss., and Mrs. N. H. Short of Webster City, Iowa. There are eighteen grandchildren.

Rites Held For Mrs. Anderson

Funeral services for Mrs. Judith Anderson,66,sister of Herb Anderson sr.,of Hawarden, who died Wednesday at the Hudson hospital after a year's illness, were held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Nathanael Lutheran church at Alcester. Rev. Nels Bergstrom officiated with burial at Pleasant Hill cemetery.

Mrs. Anderson was born January 24, 1895 in Union county, South Dakota. She married Oscar H. Anderson on June 29, 1920.

Survivors include a son Quentin of Alcester; two sisters Mrs. Tille Mueller of Alcester and Mrs.David Lundeen of Huron, SD.,a brother, Herb Anderson,sr., and three grandchildren.

 

Carl A. Anderson 1975

Carl A. Anderson, 92, died June 15 at a Sioux Falls, SD hospital after a lengthy illness.

Services were at 2 P.M., June 18 at the Congregational Church in Hudson. Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery in Canton under direction of the VanDeMore Funeral Home of Hudson.

Mr. Anderson was born Jan. 29, 1883 in Marcus, Iowa. He moved to Hudson as a young man and served as a mail messenger in Hudson for many years. He was a veteran of World War I service in France and was a member of American Legion Bergstrom-Bodeen Post 126.

Survivors include four sisters, Mrs. Maybelle Schlup and Mrs. Inez Iverson, both of Hudson, and Mrs. Emmia Skorhelm and Mrs. Mildred Parkin, both of Minneapolis.

Rites Today For Mrs. Anderson

Funeral services for Mrs. Ida Anderson,79, mother of Mrs. Donald Schoen of Hawarden, who died Monday at the home of another daughter at Hudson, will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon (Thursday) at the Hudson Lutheran church, Rev. Oliver Everson will officiate with burial in Eden cemetery at Hudson.

Mrs. Anderson was born in Lincoln county and was a lifelong resident of the Hudson community. Some time ago she was hospitalized in Hawarden and later cared for at the home of Mrs. Schoen. More recently she returned to Hudson to live with a daughter.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Lancelot Sogn, Mrs. Elmer Turner, both of Hudson; Mrs. Albert Helgerson of Albert Lea, Minn., and Mrs. Lucille Schoen of Hawarden.

Bob was born June 16, 1925 in Hudson, SD to Andrew and Jaunita (Johnson) Anderberg. Bob graduated from the Hudson High School. He served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946. On February 28, 1948, Bob married Betty Anderson at Peace Lutheran Church near Alcester, SD. During their marriage, Bob managed many Harvest States lumber yards for 28 years including ones in Elk Point, SD, Wakonda, SD, and Alton, IA. After years of management, he became a lumber buyer at the main office for Harvest States in St. Paul, MN for 17 years. Bob and Betty retired to Hawarden in 1983.
Bob was an active member at the American Lutheran Church, Hawarden American Legion, and Eagles. He was also an avid golfer and loved playing pinnacle. When he wasn’t golfing, Bob could be seen cheering on the Minnesota Vikings or Minnesota Twins.
Bob is survived by his wife, Betty; brothers, Arnold of Chicago, IL, Herbert (Verla) of Yankton, SD, and Norman (Ginny) of Denver, CO; many nieces and nephews; and 17 God-children.

DIED : Mrs. Halver Austin of heart failure on Friday morning, April 2. The deceased was one of the early settlers of Sioux county, she and her
husband having braved all the trials and privations of the early pioneer days on their now finely improved farm four miles north of Hudson.
She was a true Christian lady, a fond and loving wife and mother, and was greatly esteemed by all who knew her. She leaves a husband, two sons
and two daughters to mourn her loss.
Her remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Beloit.

George E. Beadle 1964

HUDSON, S. D.--Special: Funeral services for George E. Beadle, 85, who died Wednesday at a Hudson hospital after a brief illness, will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Congregational Church here. The Rev. David Graham will officiate.

Burial will be in the Graceland Park Cemetery at Sioux City.

Mr. Beadle was born June 14, 1878 (error--1877), in Sioux County, Iowa. He was married to Nellie Small, who preceded him in death, in 1901 (error--1910). He farmed in Sioux County for seven years before entering the grocery business at Hudson. He was in the grocery business 40 years before his retirement eight years ago.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. William Sprick of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Mrs. V. D. Ferris of Hudson; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Former Hawarden Resident Dies

Edwin E. Bemiss,80,former Hawarden resident, died from a heart attack at his home in Tacoma, Wash., Sunday, March 20, Funeral services were held at Tacoma with burial there.

Mr. Bemiss was born at Steamboat Rock, Iowa, on June 26, 1879, and married Marie Grevlos September 4, 1901.

The family lived in Hawarden prior to moving to Hudson in 1910. He was a barber in which business he continued in Hudson until 1937 when he and his wife, and daughter, Doris moved to Tacoma.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Clara Eckhart, a granddaughter, two sisters and a brother

 

Grace Alice Longinaker 1972

Grace Alice Longinaker was born May 25, 1889, in Dakota Territory in Lincoln County, Hudson to parents John L. and Margaret Taylor Longinaker. She was baptized and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church, Alcester, South Dakota. It was there she was married to Edward Behnke on Sept. 9, 1908. With the exception of 11 years living in Sioux Falls, S.D., they resided on a farm south of Beresford until retiring in 1967, when they moved to Beresford. Her husband passed away on October 28, 1968. She was a lifelong member of Peace Lutheran Church of Alcester, S.D.

Mrs. Behnke entered into eternal rest from a heart attack early Saturday morning, Sept. 23, at her home in Beresford, at the age of 83 years, 3 months and 28 days. Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Irene Barnes, Beresford; one brother, John Longinaker, Renton, Washington. Burial was in the family plot in Peace Lutheran Church, Alcester, on Tuesday, September 26, 1972.

Mrs. Frank (Ruby) Cable

 

Mrs. Ruby Cable is dead. Her life went out at her home two miles west of Hudson, on Wednesday, Feb 7th, after an illness of less than two days. The cause of her death being due to inflammation of the bowels, which complaint she had been troubled with a number of years. Mrs. Cable was the daughter of Willis E. Jones and wife and was born in Cherokee, Feb. 26, 1876. She came to Hudson with her parents in 1888, and has lived here ever since. She became the wife of Frank B. Cable, Oct. 18th, 1899. Her death is a sad one particularly because she was yet in the prime of life. The funeral occurred at the Congregational church, and the services were conducted by Rev. Geo. S. Evens, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Hudson cemetery. The sympathy of the whole community is extended to the husband and parents.

DIED; -- Mrs. Frank B. Cable at her home two miles west of here on Wednesday at noon, of inflammation of the bowels. The sad news of Mrs. Cable's sudden death came as a terrible shock to her scores of friends here, many of whom knew nothing of her illness until an hour before she died when the sad report was spread that she could not live. She had been ill but two days and on Wednesday morning she seemed much improved, but was taken worse again at ten o'clock, when a severe vomiting spell set in, during which a blood vessel burst causing internal hemorrhage for which nothing could be done and which was the cause of her sudden and unlooked for death. All that could be done for her was done, but it was of no avail and her spirit fled to those brighter realms where suffering is known no more.

She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Jones and was well known and esteemed by all our citizens. She and her husband had been married but four short months and their married life was a very happy one and the cruel blow falls hardest on the young husband so suddenly bereft of a loving and beloved helpmeet. She leaves a husband, father, mother, three brothers, three sisters and many other relatives and scores of friends who sincerely mourn her loss, and her sudden death has cast a gloom over the whole community for she was well known and highly esteemed by all who knew her. Her remains were laid to rest on Friday afternoon. We join her scores of friends in extending our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved ones she left behind, and may He who tempers the wind to the short lamb bring consolation to their sorrowing hearts in this their hour of darkest grief.

All that was earthly of Mrs. Ruby Cable was tenderly laid away in the Eden cemetery Friday afternoon. The crowd at the church and which followed the remains to their last resting place was one of the largest ever gathered together in Hudson, and was an indication of the respect and esteem in which the deceased was held by the entire community. The demonstrations of sorrow and grief shows by those who mourn for her so sincerely, was very pathetic to behold, and shows how hard it is to part with a loved one even though the world has been schooling itself for centuries to meet the inevitable fate which misses no one.

Some of those from outside points who were present at the obsequies were Geo. D. Jones, of Chicago, a brother of the deceased, Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Cable, of Chamberlain, Mr. and Mrs. Will Cable of Perkins, and Mr. and Mrs. Marion Cable, of Garretson, and many others whose names we did not learn. Ray Jones who has been residing in Colorado for some months past found it impossible to arrive here in time, the prevailing bad weather last week throughout the west delaying the trains so that he was unable to get farther than Sioux City until Saturday morning.

Robert Michael Carlson

 

YOUNG BOY DIES OF HEART ATTACK

Robert Michael Carlson, 2-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Carlson of Hudson, died suddenly while playing at his home last Friday. The boy went out to swing and had been gone but five or ten minutes when his body was found. It is believed that he died from a heart attack, as there were no marks on his body or head to show that he had fallen or strangled in the swing.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Lutheran church at Hudson with Rev. Larson in charge. Burial was at Hudson.

Robert Michael Carlson was born at Oakes, N.D., Feb. 22, 1941. He came to Hudson last spring with his parents and lived in the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Thompt. Mr. Carlson was in the creamery business at Oakes, but due to the farm labor shortage this spring, Mr. Thompt persuaded him to come to Hudson to help with the work on the farm. Besides his parents he is survived by one sister Virgene, aged 3 years.

Mrs. Carlson, mother of the boy, is a niece of G. E. Anderson of Hawarden. Mr. Anderson and Mr. and Mrs. Keaven Kane of Hawarden attended the funeral.

Mrs. Dagmer Carpenter of Hudson South Dakota formerly a student at the Hull academy died at her home on Monday January eleventh of Quick consumption. Mrs. Brown of Hull and her daughter Mrs. Chas Cassill of Canton helped to care for the sick lady who was much beloved and regretted by all who knew her. She leaves a sorrowing husband and two brothers to mourn her loss.

Harry Cassill

A telegram was received here last week on Tuesday evening by C. H.Cassill, giving the sad intelligence of the drowning of Mr. Cassill's  younger brother, Harry, at Clear Lake, Iowa, that evening. Mr. and Mrs. Cassill at once drove to Rock Valley and caught the early morning  passenger east, to the scene of the sad accident. It seems that Harry, in company with a number of others had gone bathing in the lake. The waves kept rising higher and the water became rougher before the bathers noticed anything wrong and it was all some of them could do to reach the beach. Harry must have caught a cramp as he went down before assistance could reach him.

The remains were taken to Garner, Iowa, for interment and were followed to their last resting place by a large cortege of relatives and friends.  Harry , was a bright, promising youth, beloved by all who knew him and his sudden taking away leaves many aching hearts behind  who sincerely mourn for him. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved relatives and hope that He "who tempers the wind to the shorn lamb" will also temper the great sorrow so unexpectedly thrown upon the many loving hearts left behind.

 

Frank Cassill

Frank Cassill, cashier of the Hudson state bank, who was injured in an auto mobile accident, near Westfield when returning from Sioux City about four weeks ago, died on the 4th of July as a result of his injuries. In the accident he had his left foot broken above the knee and his left foot badly crushed.

The surgeons decided that half of the foot must be taken off and performed the operation. Later it was found necessary to amputate the leg above the broken place as the only hope of saving his life. This last hope was resorted to, but failed to stay the hand of death. The deceased was one of Hudson's most highly respected business men and citizens and his untimely death will be mourned by large circle of friends beside those of the family circle.

Comprising a wife and son besides a father and mother and brothers and sisters, to mourn his loss. C. Cassill of Spokane, Washington. Ed Cassill of Pierre South Dakota—brothers of the deceased; Miss. N. Cassill, a sister and his mother of Garner Iowa, with Mrs. Rosabury of Oregon and Hon. A. C. Ripley of Garner Iowa, were here at the time of Mr. Cassill's death. The funeral was at the Methodist church July fifth at -1 P. M. and he was taken to Garner to be buried.

Merle Chamberlain

Merle Chamberlain whose home until about two years ago had been Hudson and who spent all his life with his parents—died in Sioux City  after an operation for appendicitis lie was nineteen years old and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. He was a graduate of the Hudson  high school and was a student at Morningside college at the time of his death. The funeral was held at Hudson and interment was made in the Hudson cemetery. His was a noble life and he leaves his grief stricken parents and a sister besides many friends to mourn his death.

The five and a half year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N. (Norris) J. Chamberlain was taken very ill early Monday morning with catarrhal-pneumonia, and although everything possible was done for the child she succumbed to the violence of the attack and her spirit fled to that better land a little before noon. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon, the remains being laid to rest in the Eden cemetery. The bereaved parents have the sympathy of the entire community at this their time of deepest grief.

Granville Edmundson Chivingtion

On Thursday morning April 17, occurred the death of G. E. Chivington living about a mile south of town.
Mr. Chivington was born in Mercer county Ohio February 1851. From Ohio, he moved to Michigan then to eastern Iowa, later to Warrensburg Missouri and lastly to this city in 1899. Since his arrival in Dakota he has been a great sufferer from consumption having been confined to his bed since early in the winter.
Funeral services were conducted at the home where a large number of friends assembled to pay their last respects to the departed. Besides his wife he leaves two daughters and four sons one of whom resides in Montana, also two sisters Mrs. Petrie of Michigan and Mrs. Fireoved of Warrensburg Missouri to mourn his loss. We extend our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family.

Philip Henry Bartlett Clement

Died - In Chicago, July 26, of Bright's disease, P. H. B. Clement, aged 48 years 3 months and 8 days. The deceased was an old settler in Lincoln county, coming here in 1869 from Vermont, and never residing outside of the county since. For the last twelve years he has been a partner in the merchantile firm of Bradley & Clement, and by his assiduous attention to business, by his sterling honesty and integrity, and by his accommodating and cheerful ways he won the respect and confidence of all who knew him. He had a stock of humor all his own, always having a kind word for everyone. Three weeks before his death he left for Chicago, and placed himself under the care of a specialist, but the disease had been of too long standing, and paralysis set in, first of the limbs and at last touching the heart; thus taking from his loved ones a good husband and a kind father. The funeral services were held at the Congregational church where the Rev. Evans, Cowin and Norton spoke words of consolation, and from there the remains were followed to their last resting place by the K. of P. Lodges of Hudson, Canton, Hawarden, Sioux Center, and Alcester, Mrs. Clement being a member of that order. The deceased leaves a wife and two children, and a sister, Mr. Ball of Yankton, to mourn his lass. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the mourning relatives in this their hour of darkest trial.

(Philip Henry Bartlett Clement was born 17 May 1847 Boston Mass. died 26 Jul 1895 Chicago IA at the Willard Hotel. He lost his parents at a young age. Philip S. Clement 1812-1851 and Charlotte M. Clement 1813-1854. He was the only child and was adopted by a Mrs. Catherine Brown. His wife was Harriet Allen, another account in his obit of another newspaper states her name as Harriet Snyder. 1849-1912. His children were Allen Bartlett Clement 1885-1944 and Amanda E. Clement 1888-1971. He and several of the family members are buried in the Eden Cemetery at Hudson SD.)

 

C.W. Crawford

Fatal Accident at Hudson SD.(just on the west side of the Iowa border, near Hawarden)
A Hudson dispatch says an accident occurred there Monday which resulted in the death of C. W. Crawford by getting crushed in the gearing of the waterwheel which furnishes the power to run the Grist mill. It seems that the mill had just shut down to do some repairing. Crawford and some others, hastened to the flume to stop the waterwheel, when Crawford slipped and fell headlong into the gearing, killing him instantly. He was a leading merchant of Hudson and highly esteemed. He was 24 years of age, unmarried, and leaves an aged mother and two brothers to mourn his sudden taking away.

The sad intelligence of the sudden death by heart failure of Mrs. Cross of Rock Valley, was received here Friday morning, and came as a great shock to her daughter, Mrs. Fred Lookins, and her other relatives residing here. The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon, the remains, being brought here, first to the M. E. church where the funeral services were held, and then to the Eden, cemetery, where they were laid to rest in their last resting place. Mrs. Cross was well known and highly esteemed here, and her many friends deeply sympathize with her husband and other bereaved ones she left behind.

Mrs. Cross could have been the second marriage name. Emma Hassler was born 1871 in Illinois to Norbert and Adlgunda Hassler.  Fred and Emma lost an infant in 1896 and the 1900 census confirms she was the mother of three children with 2 living)

 

Tom Dawson

Tom Dawson, 56, a life -long resident of the Hawarden and Hudson communities, died last Wednesday at the Hawarden hospital where he had been a patient two months. Mr. Dawson had been ill a long time suffering from a heart ailment.

A son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Dawson, he was born on a farm northwest of Hawarden December 30, 1896. After completing his elementary education he was graduated from Hawarden High School. While attending South Dakota State College at Brookings, he was called into the services of World War I.

On December 22, 1939, he was married to Miss Lulu Larson of Hudson and they lived on a farm between Hawarden and Hudson.

Survivors are the widow; four children, Sandra, 12, Tommy, 10, Charley, 8 and Quinton, 5; his aged mother, Mrs. Charles Dawson; one brother, J. C. Dawson of Hawarden; three sisters, Miss Anne, at home at the present; Mrs. Viva Marshall, who teachers at Doon, and Miss Laura, who teaches at Winnetka, Ill.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Hawarden and the American Legion of Hudson.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Congregational church in Hudson with Rev. David Graham, the pastor, assisted by Rev. Christopherson of the Hudson Lutheran Church, officiating.

The Masonic Lodge of Hawarden gave the ritualistic work and the American Legion of Hudson was in charge of the military service at the grave. Burial was in Eden Cemetery at Hudson under the direction of the Barnard Funeral Home of Hawarden.

Irene De Yager, 11 year old daughter of Mr.  & Mrs. Sam De Yager of Hudson, died last Friday in the Hawarden hospital.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the Christian Reformed Church in Hawarden with Rev. J. Cupido officiating. Burial was in Grace Hill cemetery under the direction of the Frazier Funeral Home.

Irene was born November 12, 1940, at Fairview, SD. She moved to the Hudson vicinity with her parents seven years ago. She attended the Christian Reformed school at Lebanon and was in the sixth grade. She was a member of the Christian Reformed Church of Hawarden.

Besides her parents she is survived by four brothers, Garrett, Albert and William of Hawarden and Sam, Jr. at home; one sister, Mrs. Tracy Byker of Hawarden; her grandfather, Albert Gerritsen of Rock Valley and her grandmother, Mrs. Tillie Katje of Artesia, CA.

Tragedy visited the home of a young couple living on a farm near Rock Valley Tuesday when Gerrit De Boer 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. Klaas De Boer also living near Rock Valley, passed away at the Hudson, S.D. hospital following an illness of sixteen days.
The young man had been suffering from ulcers of the stomach for some time and was taken to the hospital about two and a half weeks ago. He was operated last week but gradually lost in his fight to regain strength, and passed away on Tuesday, October 1,
He is survived by his grief-stricken wife who is an expectant mother; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Klaas De Boer; two brothers, John and Frank of Rock Valley; one sister, Elizabeth of Rock Valley and another sister, Mrs. John Meerbeek of Lebanon, and a host relatives on his wife’s side, among them Mrs. Maas Van Beek of Sioux Center, who is a sister to the widow.
Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, October 21st, at 1 o’clock from the home and at 2 p.m. from the First Christian Reformed church, Rock Valley with Rev. J. Gritters officiating. Interment will take place the Inwood Cemetery.

Doris Schoen was born June 24, 1940 to Floyd and Nellie (Christensen) Schoen in Hudson, SD. Doris was taken in as a young girl by Ralph and Ida Thorpe. She graduated from Hudson High School in 1958. Doris was united in marriage to William "Bill" DeBondt on October 24, 1959 at Hudson Lutheran Church, Hudson, SD. She worked for various employers which include: State Bank of Hudson, Bill’s Bar of Hudson, Bank First in Sioux Falls and McNally’s Irish Pub in Sioux Falls. Bill died June 23, 2006.

Blessed to have shared her life are 2 sons: Wm. S. (Bonnie) DeBondt of Centerville, SD and Tobin S. DeBondt of Sioux Falls, SD; 2 grandchildren: Cody (Sarah Mayer - fiance) and Callie DeBondt; sister, Donna Middle of Nevada, IA; brother, Ralph Thorpe of Lincoln, NE.

She was preceded in death by her husband William DeBondt, her parents, Floyd and Nellie Schoen, brothers: Donald and Floyd Schoen; sisters: Betty Ingebretson and Beverly Kline; parents, Ralph and Ida Thorpe; brothers: Bob, Albert and Dale Thorpe; sisters: Irene "Pep" Mitchell and Marge Coleman.

Hudson, SD: William "Bill" DeBondt, 72, died Friday, June 23, 2006 at Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls, due to a dissected aorta. Funeral Service will be 2 pm Tuesday at Hudson Lutheran Church. Bill was born May 29, 1934 at Sioux Center, IA, son of Teunis and Hattie (Schreiver) DeBondt. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War 1953-1955. Bill married Doris Schoen on October 24, 1959 at Hudson Lutheran Church. Bill farmed with his Dad; driver for Sioux Center Creamery (10 yr); payloader operator at Hymen’s Sand and Gravel; and then owned Bill’s Bar and Casino at Hudson for 22 years. After retirement, Bill worked part-time at Harold’s Photography and for the City of Sioux Falls.

Blessed to have shared his life were his wife, Doris; 2 sons, Wm. S. (Bonnie) DeBondt of Centerville, SD, Tobin S. DeBondt of Sioux Falls; 2 grandchildren, Cody and Callie DeBondt; 2 brothers, Everet (Harriet) DeBondt and Tom (Nancy) DeBondt all of Sioux Center; 3 sisters, Marie Winterfeld of Sioux Center, Madeline Koning of Bellflower, CA, Caroline De Haan of Orange City, IA.

After a long illness Emory Denbow passed away Tuesday morning. He died of consumption. He leaves a wife and five children to mourn his

Mrs. DeRaad Of Rural Hudson Dies at Age 44

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Hudson Lutheran church and burial was made in the Ireton cemetery for Mrs. Arthur DeRaad, 44, who died at a Sioux Falls hospital Saturday morning.

Mrs. DeRaad, who resided about two miles east of Hudson, was operated on twice for a complication believed to be a tumor on the brain. The second operation was performed the day before her death.

Rev. E. S. Skaar officiated at the services which were under the direction of the VanDeMore Funeral home. Pall bearers were Pete Vos, Tunia Jansma, Dick Van Wyke, Ed Van Hunnick, Al Jager and Tony DeBondt.

Laura Augusta Jahde was born October 28, 1911, on a farm in Sioux County near Hawarden. She was baptized and confirmed in the Peace Lutheran church near Sioux Center. She resided with her parents on their farm until her marriage to Arthur DeRaad on December 12, 1929. To this union four children were born: Elnora, now Mrs. Oscar Erickson, Jr.; Lonny, a student at Hudson high school; Ervin, who died in infancy; and LeRoy. who died at the age of 5.

Mrs. DeRaad lived in Sioux county all of her life, and moved to her present home in 1937 where she resided until she became hospitalized a little less than two months ago.

Survivors besides her husband and children include: two grandchildren; her mother, Mrs. Mary Jahde of Hawarden; two sisters, Mrs. John Kenowith of Ireton and Elsie Jahde of Hawarden; three brothers, Herman Jahde of LeMars and Fred and Wall Jahde of Hawarden and several nieces and nephews.

 

Lonny Dean DeRaad
 

Lonny Dean DeRaad, 51, of rural Hudson, died Monday, Feb. 17, 1992, at his residence as the result of a farm accident.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Community Reformed church in Hawarden, with Rev. Ralph Van Rheenen officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City, Iowa, under the Porter-Dow funeral home in Hawarden.

Mr. DeRaad was born Aug. 27, 1940, in Hudson, the son of Art and Laura (Jahde) DeRaad. He attended rural grade school and graduated from Hudson high school in 1958. He served with the navy from 1958 to 1961, having been stationed in Guam. He attended Sioux Empire college in Hawarden following the service and later began.  He married Helen Schollerman in 1965. He later married Frankey Van Pelt May 24, 1980, in Orange City. Iowa. The couple farmed near Hudson. He had been employed at the Wells Dairy in Le Mars, the last five years. Mr. DeRaad was a member of the Community Reformed church, where he was active in the Men's Brotherhood and served as youth sponsor of the RCYF for one year.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Neal and his wife, Brenda, of Hawarden and Michael James DeRaad at home; a daughter, Gina Ver Mulm, of Hawarden; two stepdaughters, Shelly Vonk and her husband, Mike, of Doon, Iowa, and Kristi Pies and her husband, Tim, of Hawarden; two grandchildren, Daniel and Thomas Ver Mulm, both of Hudson; his maternal stepmother, Josie DeRaad, of Chatsworth, Iowa; a sister, Mrs. Bud (Elnora) Erickson, of Snohomish, Wash.; two nephews; and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two and Ervin.

William DeVos

OBITUARIES--William De Vos, 68 died Thursday at a Sioux Falls hospital after suffering a heart attack.

Services were at 10:a.m.at the Hudson Lutheran Church with the Rev. Marlin Haugrud officiating. Burial was at the Eden Cemetery in Hudson, SD.

William De Vos was born April 11, 1909 to Fannie and Arie De Vos at Sioux Center, Iowa. He attended school at Sioux Center, Iowa. On February 14, 1936 he was united in marriage with Marie Van Beek at Orange City, Iowa. to this union three children were born; Johanna, Arlin and Mary. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. De Vos farmed in the Sioux Center, Hawarden and Hudson areas. In 1954 they moved to the town of Hudson to reside, but continued farming until his death. He was a member of the Hudson Lutheran Church. He was preceded in death by his mother.

Surviving him are his widow, Marie, of Hudson, one son, Arlin of Hudson, two daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Johanna) Medema of Alcester, SD. and Mrs. William (Mary)De Vries of Walker, Minn. His father, Arie De Vos of Sioux Center, Iowa, one brother, John, of Hull, and one sister Mrs. Marion De Kock, Sr. of Hawarden and 8 grandchildren

John Wesley Dixon

John Wesley Dixon, 63, formerly of Hudson died April 23, at the South Bend Indiana hospital where he had been a patient for the past six weeks. Funeral services were held Thursday at the First Congregational Church in Hudson with Rev. Milo Sheldon officiating. Burial services were held at the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake.

Mr. Dixon was born on Oct. 20, 1909 to Lillian and George Dixon on a farm in Lincoln County. He received his education at McVay rural school and Hudson High School. After his graduation from high school in 1928 he was employed at Linn Grove. On Jan 1 1943 he was united in marriage with Verna Boese at Sioux Rapids. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Dixon resided at Linn Grove and Omaha, Neb. In 1945 they moved to Hudson where Wesley operated a Produce Hatchery Business. The last ten years he had been employed by the Skyline Trailer Corporation at Elkhart. He had been failing in health for the past five years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife who died in 1969. He is survived by one brother, Wilbur of Hawarden and one sister, Mrs. Earl (Opal) Schlumbohm also of Hawarden

D. C. Doty, a former Hudson resident, but now living near Centerville, buried his eight-months old child, in our cemetery Sunday.

Robert O. Duncan

Robert O. Duncan, business man of Hudson, who was well known in Hawarden, passed away in Chicago Monday May 8 following an operation for stomach ulcers. His remains were brought back to Hudson and funeral services were held at the Lutheran church last Friday afternoon, with Rev. Richard Larson in charge. Burial was in Eden cemetery

Robert Oakes Duncan, son of Mrs. and Mrs. Archie Duncan was born on a farm near Beresford May 5, 1894, and so had attained the age of 50 years at the time of his death. When 13 years of age he came to Hawarden and lived here for a number of years, after which he moved to Hudson. He was united in marriage with Rose Mc  Manaman of Hawarden in 1913 and to this union were born five children, one of whom died in infancy. The surviving children of this marriage are Mrs. Paul Meyers of Junture, Calif.; Mrs. Robert Lansey of Chicago; Miss Veronica Duncan of Sioux Falls and Sgt. Fern Duncan who in the marines, of Philadelphia, PA. His first wife died in Sep 1922.

In April 1924 he married Della Johnson of Hudson and to this union were born eight children, Pvt Robert Jr. who is in the marines at San Diego, Calif.; Frank of Chicago and Delbert, Patricia, Bette, William, James and Donald, at home. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Nellie Duncan of North Hollywood, Calif; and four sisters Sallie and Viola and Mrs. Perle Ellis of California and Mrs. Ruby Gourley of Hudson

Mrs. Nellie Duncan

Mrs. Nellie Duncan,75, of Hudson died Wednesday , March 15 in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chas Gourley . Mrs. Duncan came back recently from California because of her serious illness. She was submitted to surgery last January 24 and four weeks later at her request she returned to Hudson.

Mrs. Duncan was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Oakes, Pioneer resident of Union county, and a sister of Henry and Glenn Oakes in whose honor the American Legion Two Oakes Post of Hawarden, was named. Her father was a Civil War veteran.

Born at Genoa Wis., June 2, 1874, she came to union County with her parents at the age of 4, locating her parents at the age of 4, locating on a farm about six miles southwest of Hawarden. While teaching school near Beresford, she met Archie M. Duncan, whom she married June 14, 1893. They lived on the Duncan homestead until 1910 when she and her husband came to Hawarden. In 1913 Mr. and Mrs. Duncan bought a farm near Hudson and lived on it until Mr. Duncan’s death in 1933. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Duncan went to Canton to live with her daughter, Sally, who taught school. In 1941 she went to California to spend the summer with Sally and spent most of the rest of her life in the west. However, she made four trips back to her old home.

She is survived by four daughters, Mrs., Rubye  Gourley of Hudson , Mrs. Eva Ellis and Mrs. Viola Tschetter of Burbank, Calif., and Mrs. Sally Gibbs of North Hollywood, Calif. Funeral services were held at the Congregational church at Hudson .

 

Mrs. Robert O. Duncan

Mrs. Robert O Duncan passed away at her home in Hudson SD., shortly before 6 o’clock Saturday morning following a week of illness. She was seized with an attack of Appendicitis and within a few hours peritonitis set in and the poison spread through her system rapidly. For several days it was evident that she would not recover and all efforts with skilled medical attendance and nurses failed to bring down the fever which remained at 106 for hours and she gradually weaken under the strain of intense suffering until death came mercifully her relief early Saturday morning.

Rose Ann McManaman was born in Hawarden June 29 1896 a little over 26 years ago and until her marriage; her home had always been in this city. She was united in marriage with Robert Oakes Duncan Dec 19, 1912 and for a number of years following they resided on a farm north of Hawarden. Four years ago they moved to Hudson, where Mr. Duncan engaged in the garage business. Five children came to be blessing this union, Virginia aged 8, Eleanor aged 7, Veronica aged 6, Fern aged 4 and Robert Bernard who died in infancy. Beside her husband and her children, she is survived by her aged mother Mrs. Mary McManaman of Hawarden two brothers Peter J. of Hawarden and Bernard of Omaha and three sisters, Mrs. George Levins of Finley, ND and Miss Agnes and Stella McManaman of Hawarden, all of whom were at her bedside in her last hours. She was a member of the Royal Neighbor Lodge and the Woman’s Auxiliary of the American Legion.

Funeral services we held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at the M.E. church at Hudson conducted by the pastor Rev. Jackson and she was laid to rest in the Hudson cemetery beside her baby boy

 

Mrs. G. A. Dunham

Mrs. G. A. Dunham, nee Miss Eliza Taylor, died at her home in this city on Tuesday, Jan. 2, of that dread disease, consumption, of which she has been a sufferer for more than a year. She leaves a husband, four children, a mother, besides brothers, sisters and other relatives, as well as a host of friends, embracing nearly the entire community, to mourn her loss. She was born at Hudson (then Eden), S.D., in 1873 and has ever since resided in this vicinity. She was laid to rest on Thursday from the Presbyterian church, Rev. Anderson conducting the services.
