Pauline ‘Polly’ Eckley Hawarden Independent(March 2002) Pauline "Polly" Eckley,83,died Friday, March 22, 2002 at the Colonial Manor of Hudson. Funeral services was Monday at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton, with burial at Lands Lutheran Cemetery. Annie Pauline Eckley was born Oct. 28, 1918 at Cornersville,Tenn, the daughter of Ollie and Regina Wilkes. She grew up and received her formal education at Lewisburg Tenn. She was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Lewisburg, where she taught Sunday School, served as Director and Chancellor of youth activities, and was active with Missionary Society work. She Married Cyrus Eckley of Hudson, SD. on March 3, 1946 in Lewisburg. They farmed near Hudson for 34 years. Following the death of Mr. Eckley on June 19, 1980 she remained on the family farm until becoming a resident at Colonial Manor in November of 2001. Survivors include; nieces, Sharon Dominisee of Hudson, Dorothy Knutson of Sioux Falls, Charlotte Rodway of Canton; nephews in Tennessee; special great and great-great nieces and nephews
Source:Hawarden Independent(11-1-1979) Mrs. Will Emmers Mrs. Will Emmers,55,of Hudson, died Wednesday, Oct 24,in a hospital at Sioux Falls of brief illness. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the United Church of Christ at Hudson, The Rev. Rodger Kube officiated. Burial was in the Grace Hill Cemetery at Hawarden under direction of the VanDeMore Funeral home of Hudson. Mrs. Emmers, the former Lois Finnie, was born June 24, 1924, at Hawarden. She was married Dec. 23, 1943. She worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Sioux City and in Hawarden. In 1956, she and her husband became owners of the Hudsonite Newspaper and moved to Hudson. She had been editor since 1960. Survivors include the widower; one daughter, Mrs. Jack (Carol)Breugem of Minneapolis, Minn; one son, Steve of Sioux Falls; one Grandchild; two brothers, Robert T. of Lakewood, Calif. and Gene of Desert Hot Spring, Calif.; and two sisters Mrs. S.E.Ellis of Hiawatha, Iowa and Mrs. Harriet Smith of Merced, Calif.

A 77 year old retired farmer, Olaf Fossum, a bachelor who lived alone in a small frame house in Hudson, suffocated in a fire which destroyed the interior of his home early Tuesday. The fire was discovered by a neighbor at about 2 A.M., firemen found Mr. Fossum's body near the kitchen door, indicating that he had tried to escape before being overcome. Origin of the fire was not immediately determined. Mr. Fossum was born in Norway and came to the United States as a boy. He farmed in Lincoln County for a number of years before retiring to Hudson. The only known survivor is a sister who lives in Carnes ? (end of paper is folded so cannot read the town). Hawarden Independent - February 25, 1960

Mrs. Charles Gourley Hawarden Independent of Nov 8, 1958 Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Friday morning at St. Mary's church with Fr. Lawrence Thos. Kearney, O. P., officiating during Fr. sisters, and four grandchildren Mrs. Theresa (James) Gourley Hawarden Independent of Aug 7, 1947 Theresa McNaughton was born in Ireland May 12, 1864, and went to Chicago when she was 20 years old. She married James Gourley in Chicago June 24, 1886, and then came to the homestead, east of Hudson in Sioux County. She lived on the home stead 61 years. At one time in the early days Mr.Gourley returned to Chicago where he was employed while his wife and children remained on the farm. Her husband died 14 years ago. She is survived by
nine daughters and two sons, Agnes and James Gourley, who are at the
home place, Mrs. Mayme Vande More, Mrs. Pearl Lode and Charles
Gourley, also of Hudson; Mrs. Rose Walker and Mrs.Lottie Olson of
Hollywood, Calif.; Mrs.Grace Walker of Centerville, S. D.; Mrs.
Ellen Waldorf of Vernon, Iowa; Mrs. Irene Kohls of Moville and Ruby
Gourley of Cherokee. There are 17 great grandchildren and 17
grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. David Graham,61, of Hudson who died at the hospital there Saturday afternoon from an extended illness were held at 2 o'clock Wednesday at the Congregation church of which her husband is pastor with Rev. Dr. Ralph J. Hoffman, Rev Donald R. Asman and Rev. Olivere E. Everson officiating. Sarah May Gilkeson was born March 11, 1905 at Arcadia, Neb.to Amanda and Charles Gilkeson. She attended grade school at Arcadia and graduated from high school at Goehenburg, Neb., She enrolled at Kearney State Teachers college and then at the University of South Dakota where she received her bachelor of arts degree. She taught school for a number of years in Nebraska, Wyoming and South Dakota. On January 11, 1932, she married Rev. David Graham at Rapid City,SD. They resided at Hill City,SD., Winfred,SD., Centerville,SD., Ipswich,SD, Elk Point,SD., and since June of 1950 they made their home in Hudson. Her husband served as minister of the Frist Congregation church in each of those towns. For a number of years she served as secretary of the Hudson Congregation Women's Fellowship and was one of the only two women ever to be elected moderator of the Congregation conference. Over a period of years she was active in the Friendly Service work of the State Women's Fellowship. Mrs. Graham was elected the first worthy matron of the reorganized Sioux Valley chapter No. 40, Order of the Eastern Star and for a number of years was treasurer, an office which she held at the time of her death. She was a charter member of Truth Rebekah lodge No. 129 of Elk point and last year received a 25 year membership jewel from this lodge.

Source:Hawarden Independent(7-15-1971) Mr. Paul Gubrud, age 30 died Sunday p.m. (7-10-71) near River Falls, Wisc., while participating in Sky Diving, his main chute and emergency chute failed to open. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2:oo p.m. at the Hudson Lutheran Church with the Rev. John Heruth officiating. Burial was at the Eden Cemetery at Hudson, SD. Paul Douglas Gubrud was born December 25, 1940 to Lila and Paul Gubrud at Sioux Falls, SD. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. His parents farmed in the Hudson vicinity and this is where he grew to young manhood. He attended grade school at Virginia Rural School near Hudson and high school at Hudson, SD. Following his graduation from Hudson high school he attended South Dakota State University at Brookings for a short time and later attended the University of South Dakota School of Business at Vermillion from which he graduated. He served in the United States Navy for four years. 18 months of that time on Guam. After his release from the Navy he moved to Bloomington, Minn., where he was residing at the time of his death. He was employed as Administrative Assistant in the Engineering Department of Univac Corporation. He was not married.

Hawarden IA) This summer her husband had built for her especial comfort and convenience the finest residence in these parts, modern and up to date throughout. But she lived but a short time in her new dwelling and her death was a very pathetic on as the luxurious dwelling built mostly for mother's sake, seems but an idle mockery now to the ones who loved her so truly and devotedly. Her remains were laid to rest in the Eden cemetery on Sunday afternoon, and the largest crowd that ever gathered together to do honor to a beloved and esteemed departed one in this vicinity, was there to pay a last tribute of respect to the one gone before. She leaves a husband, three son, a daughter and many other relatives to mourn her loss. To those sorrowing ones we extend our heartfelt sympathy, and may He who tempers the wind to the shorn lamb, be with them and let them remember that she has but gone before to that land where pain and suffering are known no more forever.

Mrs. Dorothy (Case) Havelaar Mrs. Case Havelaar, 65, Hudson, died Sunday at her home following a brief illness. Services were at 2 P.M., at the VanDeMore Funeral Home, Hudson. The Rev. Milo Sheldon officiated. Burial was at the Eden Cemetery, Hudson. Mrs. Havelaar, the former Dorothy George, was born June 19, 1911 in Cainsville, MO. She was married August 31, 1940 in Princeton, MO. After their marriage the couple moved to a farm near Hudson. Survivors include the widower; six sons, John of Canton; Pete of Rockford, IL; William and Henry, both of Sioux Falls; and Fred and Casey, both of Hudson; a daughter, Mrs. Guy (Ann) Brown of Sioux Falls, and six grandchildren. Source: Hawarden Independent, March 10, 1977 Hazel, William Funeral services were held December 3 at the Community Reformed Church in Hawarden for William Hazel, 82, of Hawarden, who died at the Hawarden hospital November 30. Services were conducted by the Rev. Thomas Beech and burial was in Eden Cemetery at Hudson, S.D. Mr. Hazel was born in The Netherlands June 9, 1892, and came to the U.S. in 1915. He settled in the Canton, S.D., area. On October 6, 1920, Mr. Hazel was married to Annie Hermon at Inwood. They resided on a farm in the Fairview and Hudson areas for many years. Mrs. Hazel died in 1957. He moved to Hawarden in 1961. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Harold (Wilma) Ronsiek of Hawarden, Mrs. Glenn (Clara) Larson of Papillion, Nebr., Mrs. Sam (Nellie) Keizer, of Akron and Mrs. Jennie West of Sioux Falls, S.D., four sons, Louis of Hawarden, William, Jr. of Beresford, S.D., John of Baltic, S.D., and Raymond of Hudson, 19 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Horner, Edna Mrs. Ira Mrs. Ira Horner Dies At Age 75 Funeral services for Mrs. Ira A. Horner,75, who died last Thursday at Alcester were held at the Congregational church in Hudson. Rev. David Graham officiating. Edna Mae Marshall was born May 14, 1886, near Hudson and was educated in schools of Union county. She married Ira A. Horner at Hudson June 22, 1910.
